After winning American Idol season 22 on May 19, 2024, Abi Carter said she felt both overwhelmed and numb. In a post-finale group interview with People, she described a quiet night at home before a planned flight to New York, and said she hoped to return to the studio and release music soon.

In the interview, republished by Yahoo Entertainment on May 20, 2024, Carter described the day of her win as unusually emotional while emphasizing that she felt numb in the moment:

Her words capture her own reaction after the season 22 finale; they are not a broader claim about how contestants experience a win.

Her immediate plan after the finale
Carter’s next steps sounded deliberately ordinary after the whirlwind of the show. She said she was thinking of going home, taking a shower, and perhaps watching Friends to help her sleep, then preparing to fly to New York the following morning.
“I’m thinking about going home, taking a shower, maybe watching Friends. That’s going to help me sleep, and then get ready to fly to New York in the morning.”
The May 2024 article said she was due to appear on Live with Kelly and Mark on Tuesday. That was the schedule described at the time, not a current itinerary.
She hoped to release music soon
Looking beyond the post-finale trip, Carter said she wanted to get back into the studio and put out songs as soon as possible. She explained that she had been writing for a long time and was eager to share music she believed in:
“I want to start releasing songs ASAP. I’ve been writing for so long now and I can’t wait to put something out in the world that I so fully believe in.”
She expressed an intention, not a release date or a specific schedule.

The finale moments that stood out
The interview recalled Carter performing her recently released single “This Isn’t Over” during the finale. She also received a surprise message from Billie Eilish. Carter called Eilish’s message her favorite moment and joked that she had already “won in life” when it happened.
