Martha Stewart’s path ran from a New Jersey childhood and Wall Street stockbroking to Connecticut catering, books, television, and a national lifestyle brand. The pivotal shift came when her catering work became material for Entertaining, her first book, in 1982. Her story also includes a high-profile criminal case: a securities-fraud charge was dismissed, while a jury convicted her of other offenses related to the investigation.
Childhood in New Jersey and early modeling
Martha Kostyra was born on August 3, 1941, in New Jersey, and grew up in Nutley as the second of six children. Her parents taught practical household skills, and Stewart has described her mother, known as “Big Martha,” as an important influence. She began modeling as a teenager and appeared in advertisements and television commercials while still in school. Martha Stewart’s official timeline and Biography.com’s biography document these early milestones.
College, marriage, and Wall Street
Stewart attended Barnard College in New York City, where she studied history and architectural history. She married Andrew Stewart in 1961 and graduated in 1962. In 1965, their daughter Alexis was born. Stewart worked as an institutional stockbroker beginning in 1967 and remained on Wall Street until 1972, according to Biography.com.
From a Connecticut home to a catering business
In 1970, the Stewarts bought Turkey Hill, a home in Westport, Connecticut. Stewart’s work there helped set the stage for a new career: in 1976, she opened a catering company from her kitchen, according to her official timeline. Biography.com places the start of her catering work in the late 1970s, so the sources do not establish a single agreed-upon start year. The important transition is clear: her experience preparing and presenting food for clients became the basis for a larger publishing career.

Books, magazine, and television turn expertise into a brand
Entertaining and the move into publishing
Stewart’s first book, Entertaining, was published in 1982. It drew on her catering experience and brought her approach to cooking and hosting to readers beyond her local business. Stewart later said, “What really changed my life was the publication of Entertaining in 1982,” in an interview cited by her official book list.
A magazine and a television audience
Martha Stewart Living followed. A preview issue appeared in winter 1990, and Stewart and Time Publishing Ventures launched the magazine quarterly in 1991. In 1992, Martha Stewart Living TV began as a weekly, syndicated half-hour program. The sequence widened her reach from readers of her books to magazine subscribers and television viewers. Stewart’s first-person account of her career is available in “The Martha Stewart Story: How I Became a Household Name.”

Company expansion and a public listing
During the 1990s, Stewart’s work extended into more publications and consumer products. Martha Stewart Weddings began in 1994, and a home collection with Kmart ran from 1997 to 2000. In 1999, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia went public on the New York Stock Exchange. Her career had grown from a catering service into a company spanning publishing, television, and products.
The investigation, conviction, and return to television
Stewart’s legal case followed her sale of ImClone shares. Biography.com reports that prosecutors brought a securities-fraud charge, but that charge was dismissed. A jury convicted her of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and two counts of making false statements. The distinction matters: she was not convicted of securities fraud. Biography.com reports that she received a five-month prison sentence followed by five months of home confinement, was released from prison in March 2005, and returned to television later that year. The case was a major interruption in her public career, but not its endpoint.
