Emily does not go to Miami: she travels to Michigan, kills her estranged identical twin Hope, and uses Hope’s body to fake her own death. Stephanie’s investigation exposes the switch. Emily shoots Sean for real, but he survives; Emily is arrested after her escape attempt.
Where did Emily go?
Emily tells Stephanie she is going to Miami, but instead travels to Michigan to meet Hope, her long-lost identical twin. Emily’s disappearance is not a spontaneous escape: it is part of a plan to make other people believe she is dead. Netflix Tudum’s ending guide identifies Michigan as the destination and explains the scheme.

Who is Hope, and why does Emily kill her?
Hope is Emily’s estranged twin. Emily’s real name is Faith, and she has kept both her identity and her sister’s existence from Sean. The sisters share a violent past: they killed their abusive father, Bruce, by setting fire to part of their childhood home, then separated. When Hope reappears at the summer camp where they grew up, she is addicted to heroin, needs money, and threatens to tell police about their father. Emily drowns her.
How does Emily make Hope’s body look like hers?
Emily puts her wedding ring on Hope’s finger so that the body will be identified as Emily’s. That mistaken identity is the practical hinge of the plan: Emily expects people to accept that she is dead and intends to take the money and leave the country. The insurance plot depends on the death being accepted as Emily’s; Tudum says Sean would be able to claim her $4 million life-insurance policy. The figure describes the policy in the film’s plot, not a general or independently verified insurance amount.
#1 Best Overall
- A SIMPLE FAVOR, directed by Paul Feig, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily's husband Sean (Henry Golding) in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.
How does Stephanie uncover the truth?
After police find the body, Sean and Stephanie believe Emily has died. But clues—including the children apparently seeing Emily—make Stephanie question what happened. Her investigation reveals that Emily is actually Faith and that she has concealed Hope from Sean. Stephanie and Sean ultimately work with police to set a trap for Emily.
Stephanie’s vlogging matters to the plot, not just to her characterization: she has a reason to narrate events to an online audience, and she livestreams the confrontation that helps expose Emily. In a 2018 interview, director Paul Feig described changing Stephanie’s written blog in Darcey Bell’s novel into a video vlog so that her narration would feel plausible. Feig’s interview with Boxoffice Pro also discusses the adaptation’s other changes.
Rank #2
- A SIMPLE FAVOR, directed by Paul Feig, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily's husband Sean (Henry Golding) in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.
What happens in the final confrontation?
Stephanie confronts Emily as part of a police sting. Stephanie appears to shoot Sean, but that shot is staged. Emily then draws a gun and shoots him for real. Sean survives. Stephanie has been livestreaming the encounter; Emily runs, and Darren, another school parent, hits her with his car. Emily also survives the collision and is taken into custody. The staged shot and Emily’s real shot are separate events—the apparent injury to Sean is not the real one.
What happens to Emily, Sean, and Stephanie afterward?
The film’s closing cards say Emily is serving 20 years in prison for murdering Bruce and Hope and attempting to murder Sean. Sean survives, writes another book, and becomes head of UC Berkeley’s literature department. Stephanie becomes a well-known vlogger, starts a cold-case agency, and dates someone new. These outcomes are stated in the first film’s closing cards, as summarized by Netflix Tudum.
How does the film ending differ from the novel?
The 2018 film adapts Darcey Bell’s novel A Simple Favor, but Feig intentionally changed its ending. He said, “I wanted to have a more satisfying ending. Her book ends very cynically.” He also said, “I also wanted to add a bunch more twists in the third act.” The adaptation turns Stephanie’s written blog into a video vlog as well. Feig’s Boxoffice Pro interview covers these decisions.
The source novel is A Simple Favor: A Novel by Darcey Bell. The publisher’s sell sheet lists it as a 304-page novel with an on-sale date of March 21, 2017. The HarperCollins/Edelweiss sell sheet provides those bibliographic details.
Does the sequel change who Hope is?
Another Simple Favor (2025) introduces a separate identity revelation: Emily is one of triplets, along with a further identity substitution. That is sequel material, not the explanation for the first film’s body switch. In its May 2, 2025 article, TheWrap reported that a third film had not been confirmed at that time; that dated status is not a current confirmation about the franchise.
