WIRED reported on February 25, 2026, that the pro-Trump X account Johnny MAGA appeared to be operated by Garrett Wade, a White House Rapid Response Manager. The report cited a phone number associated with Wade in publicly available records and confirmation from a source close to the White House. That is an investigative finding—not a public admission by Wade or an official White House confirmation.
What did WIRED report about Johnny MAGA?
WIRED said publicly available records linked a phone number associated with Wade to Johnny MAGA, and that a source close to the White House confirmed the connection. Wade and the White House did not respond to WIRED’s requests for comment, according to the report. Nonresponse does not confirm the account attribution.
The White House’s Annual Report to Congress on White House Office Personnel, dated as of July 1, 2025, lists “WADE, GARRETT J.” as a “RAPID RESPONSE MANAGER.” That official record corroborates Wade’s listed position; it does not establish who controls Johnny MAGA.
What evidence connects Wade to the account—and what does it establish?
The account link rests on the evidence WIRED described: a phone-number association in public records and a source close to the White House who confirmed the connection. The staff report independently establishes Wade’s job title, but it is not evidence of account ownership. WIRED’s article does not report a public admission from Wade or an official confirmation from the White House.

These distinctions matter: a documented job and an investigative account attribution are separate findings, with different sources behind them. The available reporting supports saying the account appeared to be operated by Wade, not presenting that conclusion as officially confirmed.
What kind of account is Johnny MAGA?
WIRED reported that Johnny MAGA had nearly 300,000 followers when its article appeared on February 25, 2026; that is a historical count, not a current total. The profile indicated the account was created in September 2021. WIRED said its earliest available posts focused on NFTs and that it had been consistently pro-Trump since at least 2022.

According to WIRED, the account boosted President Trump’s Truth Social posts and backed administration priorities. The article cited examples including Johnny MAGA amplifying a White House rapid-response post after the fatal ICE shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, and later echoing the White House’s explanation of Trump’s post of an AI-generated video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.
Why is the reported connection a transparency issue?
WIRED said Johnny MAGA had not disclosed an official relationship with the White House. It also noted that Mother Jones, TownHall, and the New York Post had linked to its posts as apparent expressions of organic public sentiment. If an account appears to speak as an unaffiliated supporter while its operator works on White House rapid-response communications, readers may not know that the account is amplifying messaging from the operator’s workplace. That is a transparency concern raised by the reporting, not a legal finding.

Do the consulting payments prove the account was funded or directed?
No. WIRED reported that Federal Election Commission donation records listed Wade’s employer as Opinion Architects in December 2023 and again during the 2024 election season. It also reported that MAGA Inc. paid Opinion Architects more than $325,000 for “research” and “communications” consulting. The article does not establish that these payments funded Johnny MAGA or that MAGA Inc. or Opinion Architects directed the account.

What does the report say about disclosure rules?
WIRED described a distinction between disclosure rules for paid commercial endorsements and political influencer collaborations. It reported that federal rules require creators to disclose paid commercial endorsements, while comparable federal disclosure rules do not apply to political influencer collaborations, and that the Federal Election Commission declined in 2023 to formally require creators to disclose political-entity payments. This account of the rules does not establish that Wade violated a disclosure law.
