Last Samurai Standing is officially coming back for Season 2. Netflix announced the renewal on December 19, 2025, but has not announced a premiere date, production status, episode count, or complete Season 2 cast. The disclosed story setup sends Shujiro Saga and Futaba Katsuki to Tokyo as the deadly Kodoku game continues.
Is Last Samurai Standing coming back for Season 2?
Yes. Netflix officially renewed the Japanese action series on December 19, 2025. In its renewal announcement, Netflix said Season 2 is on the way. The announcement and Netflix’s Tudum coverage do not state when it will arrive.

Netflix reported that Season 1 reached No. 1 on its Weekly Global Top 10 for Non-English Series, appeared in the Top 10 in 88 countries, and ranked No. 1 in Japan for four consecutive weeks. These are figures reported by Netflix in its renewal announcement.
When will Season 2 be released?
Netflix has not announced a Season 2 premiere date or release window. Its renewal coverage also does not give a production status or episode count, so there is no official timeline or confirmed number of episodes to report.

What happens next in Season 2?
Netflix’s renewal coverage offers a brief continuation setup, rather than a full Season 2 synopsis. The Kodoku game remains unresolved, and its organizer has yet to be identified. After receiving a mysterious summons, Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada) heads to Tokyo with Futaba Katsuki (Yumia Fujisaki).
Shujiro’s adopted siblings—Iroha Kinugasa (Kaya Kiyohara), Shikura Adashino (Taichi Saotome), and Sansuke Gion (Yûya Endô)—resolve to reunite with him. They also face Gentosai (Abe Hiroshi), their former trainer, who is hunting them.
Who is in the Season 2 cast?
Netflix has not published a definitive Season 2 cast list. The actors named above are associated with characters in the story continuation Netflix has disclosed; that is not the same as a complete cast announcement.
What is Last Samurai Standing about?
Set in Japan in 1878, the series follows former samurai who have lost their status and face poverty amid a cholera outbreak. Its central contest, Kodoku, draws 292 fallen samurai into a deadly survival game with a 100 billion yen prize. Shujiro enters hoping to save his family. Season 1 begins in Kyoto and moves toward Tokyo as contestants encounter checkpoints and collect wooden tags.

Netflix lists Season 1 as a six-episode, TV-MA Japanese action series released in 2025. The series is based on Ikusagami, a historical-fiction novel series by Shogo Imamura, illustrated by Katsumi Tatsuzawa. Netflix Tudum says the novels were serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine over four volumes beginning in December 2022. That connection identifies the source material, but does not establish the availability of a particular language or edition.
Imamura has said of changes made for the screen: “Even the parts that were changed added suspense and visual excitement that only film can offer.”

Junichi Okada, who is the lead actor, producer, and action choreographer, said: “We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed.” Director Michihito Fujii said: “I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season.” Both statements appeared in Netflix’s December 19, 2025 announcement.
