As of October 7, 2026, A Minecraft Movie has a 47% Tomatometer score from 195 critic reviews and an 84% Popcornmeter score from 10,000+ Verified Ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. That is a clear critic-audience split in the site’s current snapshot—not two competing estimates of the same poll, and not proof that every audience member liked the film.

The gap is striking, but the percentages summarize different inputs. The Tomatometer is the share of professional reviews classified as positive. The Popcornmeter reflects the share of audience ratings that meet Rotten Tomatoes’ positive-rating standard. The film page specifically labels its audience figure “Verified Ratings,” so 84% should not be presented as an unqualified measure of every viewer’s opinion.
Why are the critic and audience scores different?
The scores differ because they represent separate groups and rating systems, not because Rotten Tomatoes has calculated two versions of one survey. A critic review is classified as positive or not positive for the Tomatometer; audience ratings are counted as positive when they meet the site’s threshold. Rotten Tomatoes says 3.5 stars or higher counts as positive for the Popcornmeter display.

The site calls titles at 60% or higher Fresh and those below 60% Rotten. That threshold also marks positive audience ratings on the Popcornmeter. At this snapshot, the 47% critic score falls below it, while the 84% verified-audience score sits above it. Rotten Tomatoes explains its score labels and methodology.
The simplest accurate description is that the film’s Rotten Tomatoes aggregation shows a sharp critic-audience reception split. The figures do not establish why the groups responded differently, and the evidence does not support a specific causal explanation. Nor does an 84% audience score mean that 84% of all moviegoers, in every place and at every time, enjoyed the film.

What does Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus say?
Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes the film this way: “Ostensibly a film about celebrating creativity, A Minecraft Movie provides a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.” This is the site’s consensus summary, not a quotation from one named critic.
How do the scores compare with opening-weekend audience reactions?
Opening-weekend polling offers useful release-era context, but it is not interchangeable with the current Popcornmeter. On April 6, 2025, the Associated Press reported that audiences gave the film a B+ CinemaScore and 4 out of 5 stars in PostTrak exit polls. Those were separate audience-polling products gathered around the film’s opening, rather than later Rotten Tomatoes Verified Ratings.

The same AP report put the film’s U.S.-Canada opening at $157 million, based on studio estimates, and its worldwide debut at $301 million. Those box-office figures describe opening-weekend performance; they do not explain the score gap or measure how audiences rate the movie today. Read the Associated Press report from April 6, 2025.

Rotten Tomatoes lists the 2025 film as PG, with a 1-hour-41-minute runtime, directed by Jared Hess and featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. It is categorized as Kids & Family, Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy, and Action. The critic score signals that professional reviews were more negative than positive by Rotten Tomatoes’ classification; the higher verified-audience figure indicates that positive ratings predominate in that separate audience bucket. Neither aggregate can tell you whether its humor, tone, or adventure story will suit your taste.
