What the teaser’s film is about
The official synopsis says Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn are pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic wonderland. To get home, they must learn to navigate the world and protect it from threats including Piglins and Zombies, alongside Steve. Mojang’s September 3, 2024 first-look announcement describes Steve as an unexpected expert crafter.
This is a live-action adaptation of the game, directed by Jared Hess. The principal cast includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge; Jack Black plays Steve.

Film and release details
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are identified on the film’s official site, which names Warner Bros. as distributor. Legendary Entertainment lists April 4, 2025 as the film’s original theatrical release date; that date has passed. It is not an upcoming release date.
Availability after the theatrical release depends on territory and date. Warner Bros. Japan advertises digital viewing and 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions for Japan, with a September 19 release date on its regional home-entertainment page. Those formats and dates are Japan-specific and do not establish availability elsewhere. Check a local retailer or service for current options in your market.

Do you need Minecraft to watch it?
No. The teaser and film can be watched as screen entertainment without playing the game. Minecraft is the source material, but the official movie descriptions present a story with its own characters and plot. The game is relevant only if you also want to explore the interactive world or use Minecraft-related add-ons; Mojang says its movie-related jetpack add-on requires Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
