Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6, “The Morrow.” The finale works because it refuses to top the Trial of Seven with another spectacle. Instead, it makes the aftermath count: Dunk has to live with Baelor’s death, decide what responsibility means, and choose whether to accept Maekar’s offer to train Egg. The result is a quiet epilogue with genuine emotional closure—and a final ride that points toward the next chapter.

What happens in “The Morrow”

Season 1’s sixth and final episode follows the Trial of Seven’s casualties rather than staging another battle. Ashford mourns Baelor, and Dunk, badly injured, struggles to make sense of the prince’s death. He does not treat Baelor’s sacrifice as a fair exchange or a fortunate outcome; he feels the weight of having survived while the man who defended him did not.

That grief shapes the episode’s central decision. Maekar offers Dunk a place at Summerhall and asks him to train Egg. Dunk initially refuses, then changes his mind about taking the boy—but wants to travel as a hedge knight rather than settle at court. Maekar rejects that arrangement. Dunk leaves Ashford, and Egg joins him. The closing tag cuts back to Maekar discovering that his son is gone.

Does the quiet aftermath make a satisfying finale?

Yes. “The Morrow” understands that the season’s defining consequence is not who won the Trial, but what its violence has done to Dunk’s sense of himself. Baelor’s death is the moral reckoning the story has been moving toward: Dunk must face that his survival carries a cost he cannot neatly repay.

The episode’s restraint is a strength, not a lack of momentum. Its most consequential movement happens through choices and refusals: Dunk cannot accept a comfortable solution that would make Egg a prince’s dependent, while Maekar will not agree to let his son live as a peasant. Those incompatible positions turn a mourning episode into a turning point.

Lacy Baugher’s Den of Geek review likewise reads the hour as quiet and reflective, with Baelor’s death defining Dunk’s emotional path. Baugher rated it five out of five and wrote: “It is an episode that is both an ending and a beginning, and it’s a perfect cap to a remarkable season of television that has reminded many of us why we love this fictional universe so much.” That balance captures the finale’s achievement: Baelor’s death closes the season’s central moral wound, while Dunk and Egg’s departure begins a new journey.

What the ending says about Dunk and Egg

The final ride gives the season a clear forward direction without undoing its grief. Dunk has not solved his guilt; he has made a choice about what to do next. Taking Egg with him means accepting a responsibility different from the one Maekar proposed: not training the boy at Summerhall, but letting him travel beside a hedge knight.

The last joke—Maekar learning Egg has disappeared—keeps the departure from ending on solemnity alone. It also leaves a precise uncertainty: Egg says he has his father’s permission, but whether he truly does is not settled by the episode. In a Los Angeles Times interview, showrunner Ira Parker said the source novella does not canonically establish that permission and that the production would address Egg’s claim in Season 2. Parker described the final moment as intended primarily as a joke, not as an announced plot twist. So the scene invites a question rather than supplying a hidden answer.

How the finale handles the novella adaptation

Viewers do not need to have read the source novella to understand the episode’s emotional stakes. For those who have, the adaptation question is less about whether every scene matches the book than about how the show fills out a compact story for six short episodes. Parker told the Los Angeles Times that the production aimed to keep the novella’s core story intact while adding character material to build out the season. That approach is especially visible here: the aftermath gives Dunk’s grief and the choice over Egg room to land.

The season adapts George R. R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella. It is an optional next step for viewers who want to compare the source with the series, not homework required to follow the finale.

How critics received the episode

The cited critical response was positive, though the available figures are a snapshot rather than a measure of universal opinion. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from 11 reviews when accessed in 2026; that episode-level tally can change and is not an audience score. Baugher’s five-out-of-five Den of Geek rating offers one named review behind the favorable response.
