Misty Copeland gave her final performance with American Ballet Theatre (ABT) at the company’s Fall Gala on October 22, 2025. The farewell ended her 25-year chapter with ABT, not her life in dance: Copeland said she was ready for a next stage and that she would continue dancing.
What happened at Copeland’s final ABT performance?
The Fall Gala took place at the David H. Koch Theater in New York. It also marked Copeland’s first return to the ABT stage in five years, according to the company’s announcement. That interval describes her appearances on the ABT stage, not a pause in all her dancing.
The evening’s program brought together several works associated with Copeland’s range:
- Romeo and Juliet: Copeland danced Juliet in the balcony pas de deux with Calvin Royal III.
- Wrecka Stow: Kyle Abraham’s work was part of the program.
- Sinatra Suite: Copeland performed Twyla Tharp’s work with Herman Cornejo. The Associated Press reported that this was her final performance of the night.
The gala also included tributes and career film clips, and marked ABT’s 85th anniversary. ABT, The Misty Copeland Foundation and Lincoln Center arranged a free simulcast at Alice Tully Hall, separate from the gala venue. The simulcast began at 6:15 p.m. on October 22, 2025; complimentary tickets were distributed that afternoon. Those were arrangements for a past event, not current ticket information. Lincoln Center’s October 8 announcement described the simulcast plan.

Why was the farewell a milestone?
Copeland’s ABT career traces a path from the corps de ballet to one of the company’s most visible roles. The Associated Press reported that she joined the corps in April 2001 and became a soloist six years later. In June 2015, after her New York debut as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, she became the first Black female principal dancer in ABT’s history.
That promotion was a specific institutional milestone, not proof that ballet’s broader barriers had disappeared. Asked about the pace of progress, Copeland acknowledged the need for continuing effort. At the gala, she said, “There’s so much work and effort that has to be continuous,” as reported by the Associated Press.

What did Copeland say about leaving ABT?
In June 2025, when announcing her departure, Copeland told the Associated Press, “It’s been 25 years at ABT, and I think it’s time,” and, “It’s time for me to move to the next stage.” She made clear that the company farewell was not an announcement that she was done dancing: “So it’s a farewell. (But) it won’t be the end of me dancing. … Never say never.”
On gala night, she said, “I feel good. I feel ready to take this next step.” Her words leave her future performances open; they do not announce a specific new role or schedule.

How did others mark her influence?

ABT Artistic Director Susan Jaffe’s October announcement invited the public to celebrate Copeland’s journey and credited her artistry, courage and leadership with helping reshape ballet’s future. Lincoln Center artistic officer Shanta Thake said the simulcast would make the moment available to more people and help them see themselves as part of ballet’s future. These were statements from the organizations presenting the event.

What comes next beyond the ABT stage?
Copeland’s next chapter includes work through The Misty Copeland Foundation, whose stated mission includes making ballet affordable, accessible and fun. Its BE BOLD programs serve children and adults. In an October 27, 2025 release, the Foundation described BE BOLDER, a ballet-based wellness program for adults aged 50 and older, and announced a $1 million Celebrating Misty fundraising target. The announcement gives a campaign goal, not a final amount raised.
The Foundation’s programs offer one tangible way her work can continue beyond company performances, alongside the possibility of future dancing. The farewell therefore marks the close of a long ABT relationship while leaving Copeland’s artistic future open.
