A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is targeting the first half of 2027, according to a September 2026 report, and filming wrapped in August. HBO has renewed the series, but no exact premiere date has been announced in the sources available. The new season adapts George R. R. Martin’s novella The Sworn Sword and is expected to revisit the question of whether Egg had his father’s permission to travel with Dunk.
When does A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 come out?
The reported premiere window is the first half of 2027. TV Insider reported on September 18, 2026, that filming had wrapped in August and that the season was targeting that window. HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery have confirmed the renewal, but the official announcement reviewed did not provide an exact premiere date. TV Insider’s production update is a reported target, not a confirmed launch date.
GamesRadar separately reported that HBO chief Casey Bloys included the season among the network’s programming for the following year. That report supports a 2027 outlook, but its reference to an Emmy eligibility period does not establish a specific premiere date. GamesRadar’s report should not be read as a date announcement.
Has Season 2 finished filming?
Yes. TV Insider reported that production wrapped in August 2026. Earlier, in June, the Associated Press spoke with showrunner Ira Parker in Gran Canaria while filming was underway. The location created an unusual challenge: the story is built around drought, but the island experienced exceptionally heavy rain during production. The weather complicated the effort to depict dry conditions; it did not stop the season from completing production. The Associated Press report describes filming in Gran Canaria, while TV Insider later reported the wrap.

What book is Season 2 based on?
Season 2 adapts The Sworn Sword, George R. R. Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, published in 2003. The story takes place in the Reach, roughly a year and a half after the events of The Hedge Knight. Parker told the Los Angeles Times that the creative team considered Dorne but chose not to set this season there. The Los Angeles Times interview discusses the setting and adaptation.
The novella’s central conflict concerns a drought and a dispute over access to water, including a dam built to hold water back from others. Parker described the water conflict to the Associated Press as central to the story: “The whole story is about the drought. The whole story is somebody damming the water to keep it from someone else.” The source material points to a grounded conflict over resources rather than a move to a new region of Westeros.

Will Season 2 explain whether Egg left without permission?
It is expected to address the question, but the available comments do not reveal the answer. The first-season finale left viewers with the impression that Egg might have left without his father’s permission. Parker told the Los Angeles Times that the audience and production took the final scene literally, so he had to deal with the issue more in Season 2 than he initially planned. That makes Egg’s departure an expected story thread, not a guarantee of a particular scene or resolution.

Parker has described the season as potentially smaller and more intimate than the franchise’s larger-scale conflicts. Speaking to the Associated Press, he said, “If anything, I’d say Season 2 might feel even smaller,” and noted “some loneliness creeping into this.” Peter Claffey, who plays Dunk, told TV Insider that the story has “a lot more sadness” and brings Dunk a different challenge: attempting diplomacy with people outside the royal court. These are the creators’ and actor’s descriptions of tone and character, not evidence of a shorter season or fewer episodes.
