A Complete Unknown is worth watching for Timothée Chalamet’s committed, musical portrayal of Bob Dylan, even if the film’s familiar biopic shape cannot fully contain its elusive subject. Rather than attempt Dylan’s whole life, James Mangold’s 2024 film follows his rise through New York’s folk scene and stops at the charged 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
What A Complete Unknown covers
Set in New York in 1961, the film follows a 19-year-old musician from Minnesota as he enters Greenwich Village’s folk scene and becomes a disruptive new presence. Its story reaches the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where Dylan’s move toward electric music challenged the expectations surrounding acoustic folk. It is a focused period drama, not a cradle-to-present biography. Searchlight’s official synopsis describes the arc from the Village to Newport.

James Mangold directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks. The principal cast includes Chalamet as Dylan, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie. Searchlight says Chalamet both stars and sings as Dylan.
Is Timothée Chalamet good as Bob Dylan?
Chalamet’s performance is the film’s strongest reason to watch. He does more than resemble a famous musician: the role asks him to carry songs and guitar playing as well as the shifting presence of a young artist who resists being neatly understood. The Associated Press reports that he trained on guitar for the part. Dylan himself offered a notably open-ended endorsement in an AP interview: “Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.” The AP interview attributes that comment to Dylan.

- New York, 1961. A young Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, forging relationships with music icons on his meteoric rise which culminates in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
AP later identified Larry Saltzman as Chalamet’s guitar teacher for the role. Saltzman, a guitarist who has performed with Simon & Garfunkel, Bette Midler, and David Johansen, specializes in helping actors play music for roles. That preparation gives useful context for the film’s musical work, but training alone cannot settle how convincing every performance feels on screen. AP’s report on Saltzman details the coaching.
Where the biopic succeeds—and where it feels familiar
The film’s central tension is between an unconventional subject and a conventional biographical framework. Chalamet gives the story a compelling center, but a familiar rise-and-turning-point structure can make Dylan seem more legible than the “complete unknown” idea suggests. That is an interpretation, not a settled verdict on the film: The Atlantic’s review praises Chalamet while criticizing the movie’s conventional form. Read The Atlantic’s review for that critical perspective.

The film’s limited timeframe is both a strength and a boundary. It can concentrate on the folk scene, Dylan’s ascent, and the Newport rupture instead of compressing decades of music and reinvention into one movie. But viewers looking for a comprehensive account of Dylan’s life, or a documentary record of what happened, should look elsewhere: this is a dramatized feature about a specific formative period.
What book is the film based on?
A Complete Unknown is loosely based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric!: Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties, according to the Associated Press. Wald’s book is a useful next read for the period and Newport focus, but “loosely based” matters: the movie is not a direct or comprehensive adaptation. The AP report on the film describes its connection to the book.
