Only one reaction was reportedly unscripted: Melinda Dillon, who played Mrs. Parker, was surprised when the duck arrived with its head intact. Retrospective accounts say she had been given a different script to conceal that detail. The restaurant scene around her reaction—including the family’s dinner and the duck’s arrival—was written into the screenplay.
Which actor was surprised by the duck?
It was Melinda Dillon, not Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie. TV Insider reports that Dillon was given the wrong script for the moment so the duck would surprise her; DoYouRemember describes her script as differing from the rest of the cast’s. Both accounts attribute the surprise to the concealed detail of the duck’s intact head.

These are retrospective reports, not a first-hand statement from Dillon or a named crew member in the material reviewed. The specific account should therefore be understood as reported production history, rather than a detail established by the screenplay itself. TV Insider; DoYouRemember.
What was scripted—and what was reportedly spontaneous?
The screenplay lays out the sequence: the family loses its Christmas turkey to the dogs, the Old Man takes them to a Chinese restaurant, and a large duck is served. The family digs in, and the narrator calls it “Chinese turkey.” In other words, the dinner, the duck’s arrival and the surrounding action were part of the written scene.

What the screenplay does not establish is what Dillon knew while filming or how the production arranged her reaction. TV Insider and DoYouRemember report that her surprise was elicited by giving her a different or incorrect script. That makes the reported spontaneous moment her reaction to the duck—not an improvised restaurant sequence. The screenplay scan shows the written scene, but does not label the reaction as improvised.

A Christmas Story is a 1983 film directed by Bob Clark, with a screenplay co-written by Clark, Jean Shepherd and Leigh Brown. The American Film Institute notes that the film draws on a story from Shepherd’s 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. The restaurant scene turns a family holiday mishap into another comic setback: the turkey is gone, and dinner takes an unexpected form. AFI’s film overview provides the credits and source-story context.
