Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show offered help in several forms: scholarships for students, support for teachers and a school band, a surprise for a family, and encounters with personal heroes. It also used its platform to recognize guests who had helped others. The examples below reflect those different kinds of generosity; they are not all the same kind of “help,” and some were historical gifts rather than continuing programs.
1. Guests met the people they admired
The show made room for emotionally resonant meetings between guests and their heroes. An official Ellen channel retrospective, published November 6, 2017, revisited such encounters in anticipation of the program’s 2,500th episode. The retrospective establishes the show’s focus on these reunions, though it does not, by itself, identify the individual guests or the dates of their original segments. Watch the official retrospective.
2. Summit Academy seniors received college scholarships
Quincy Phillips and classmates from Summit Academy Charter School in Red Hook, Brooklyn, appeared on the show and received an extraordinary education opportunity. SUNY Purchase’s account says DeGeneres and Walmart offered full four-year scholarships to all 42 seniors for the New York State college of their choice. An Associated Press report carried by CBS News instead says 41 students received scholarships and values the gift at $1.6 million. The sources disagree on the class count, so the number should be treated as unresolved. Phillips later pursued interests in acting and photography at Purchase. Read SUNY Purchase’s account and the Associated Press report carried by CBS News.
3. Darrell Watson and Ballou’s marching band received support over several years
Band director Darrell Watson and the Ballou Majestic Marching Knights returned to the show across multiple years. In a 2021 appearance, 1-800-GOT-JUNK founder Brian Scudamore presented a $100,000 check for the school and plans for a mural intended to inspire students, according to the University of the District of Columbia’s 2022 profile. The profile also describes earlier donations connected with appearances, involving other organizations. Watson characterized his work as part of a cycle of mentorship: “I feel like I’m giving back what was given to me with all of the mentors I’ve had over the years.” Read UDC’s profile.

4. Teachers received recognition and classroom support
A 2020 partnership between The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Box Tops for Education featured teachers adapting to COVID-19 school closures. A Shorty Awards case study says three featured teachers received $25,000 each, while another 100 teachers received gift cards for classroom supplies. Those are figures reported in the campaign’s awards entry, not independently audited totals. See the Shorty Awards case study.
5. Dominique and Johnathon Pierce received a surprise package
In January 2013, WTVR reported that the show surprised Dominique and Johnathon Pierce, counselors to at-risk children and adults, through its “12 Days of Giveaways.” Their package was reported as worth $30,000 and included assorted gifts and a funded honeymoon. The point of the segment was the couple’s service to others and the surprise assistance they received, not a set of products available to viewers today. Read WTVR’s report.

6. The show recognized a person who bought firefighters’ meals
After the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, DeGeneres used a segment to spotlight guests who had acted selflessly. TIME reported that one of the people featured had paid for firefighters’ meals. In this case, the show’s contribution was public recognition and attention to a good deed, rather than evidence of a new prize or donation to that guest. Read TIME’s account.
7. A homecoming king shared his crown with a friend
The same TIME report described a homecoming king who gave his crown to a friend with cerebral palsy. The story showed how the show’s kindness segments could center on generosity already shown by a guest: the program highlighted the act and the friendship behind it. TIME quoted DeGeneres saying, “The world is full of amazing people. Good will always win. Love will always win. We will continue to shine a light on those people on our show.”

8. The show connected a kindness segment to help for shooting victims
TIME’s account of that 2017 episode also says the program linked its focus on people helping others with an intention to assist victims of the Las Vegas shooting with medical expenses and supplies. That made the segment more than a collection of uplifting stories: it connected recognition of individual kindness to a stated effort to address urgent needs. The report does not establish details of the resulting assistance, so it is best understood as the show’s stated response rather than a quantified outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How these moments differed
- Direct material or financial support: the Summit Academy scholarships, help for Ballou’s band, classroom support for teachers, and the Pierce family’s surprise.
- Personal connection: guests meeting heroes.
- Recognition of kindness: the firefighters’ meals and the shared homecoming crown.
- Stated community response: the show’s announced intention to help people injured in the Las Vegas shooting.
Together, the examples show why “helping guests” can mean more than giving someone a gift. Sometimes the benefit reached a student’s future or a school community; sometimes it was a public acknowledgment of compassion already shown.
