8 Ways David Gilmour Earns—and Gives Away—Money: What’s Publicly Known

Public reporting documents David Gilmour’s work in Pink Floyd, solo recordings and live performances, plus a 2024 rights transaction and several major charitable donations. It does not establish his personal net worth, a full list of his spending, or how much he earns from each activity. The reported $400 million Pink Floyd transaction was a band-level figure—not Gilmour’s disclosed personal payout.

What the public record says about Gilmour’s earnings

The eight items below are documented income-related channels and financial events, not a verified personal budget. For most, sources do not disclose Gilmour’s fees, royalty rates, costs or net income.

1. Pink Floyd’s recorded music

Gilmour’s work as a Pink Floyd member is part of the band’s recorded-music business. In 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Pink Floyd transferred rights to its recorded work to Sony Music for a reported $400 million. That is the reported value of a band-level transaction; it does not show how the money was allocated among individuals or what Gilmour personally received.

2. The 2024 recorded-work rights transaction

Gilmour described his payment from the transaction as “an advance against what I would have earned over the next few years anyway,” according to the Los Angeles Times in 2024. He did not disclose the amount of his advance or his net proceeds. He also said the publishing rights had not been sold, so the reported recorded-work deal should not be treated as a sale of all Pink Floyd-related rights.

3. Songwriting and publishing

Publishing is distinct from rights to recordings: Gilmour said the publishing rights were not part of the 2024 sale. That establishes an important boundary around the transaction, but the available reporting does not state the value of his publishing income or his precise ownership share.

4. Solo recordings

Gilmour has released solo music as well as recording with Pink Floyd. The official Pink Floyd archive announced Luck and Strange as a new David Gilmour album released by Sony Music in 2024; his official biography also documents earlier solo releases. These releases establish an ongoing recorded-music channel, not a disclosed sales total, royalty rate or personal take.

5. Concert performances and touring

The Los Angeles Times described Gilmour’s 2024 tour behind Luck and Strange, including multi-night engagements in Rome, London, Los Angeles and New York. Touring is a potential source of earnings, but the reporting does not quantify his performance fees, tour costs or net proceeds.

6. Concert films and physical music releases

Gilmour’s official biography says David Gilmour Live at Pompeii was released in September 2017 on Blu-ray, vinyl, CD and DVD. Those formats show the breadth of the release; the cited information does not give sales volume or Gilmour’s income from it.

What the public record says about assets and giving

7. Instrument collection sales

In June 2019, Gilmour sold more than 120 instruments and artefacts through Christie’s. Christie’s reported that the sale raised $21.5 million and recorded a $1,095,000 result for Gilmour’s Martin D-35 and $1,815,000 for his 1954 White Fender Stratocaster. Those are auction results for individual lots, not estimates of his remaining collection or personal wealth. Gilmour said in a 2024 Guardian interview that he kept a few favorite guitars and generally thought of guitars as tools of his trade.

8. Charitable giving from sale and music proceeds

Gilmour gave the proceeds from the 2019 instrument auction to ClientEarth, so the $21.5 million raised should not be described as money he kept. The official Pink Floyd archive and Gilmour’s official biography also state that net proceeds from the 2022 single “Hey Hey Rise Up” went to charities helping alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian people. The sources document these donations, but do not establish what proportion of Gilmour’s wealth they represent.

What remains unknown about his spending

The sources cited here do not establish Gilmour’s annual expenses, major personal purchases, property costs or a complete spending history. His comments about keeping a few guitars and viewing them as tools describe his attitude toward his collection, not how much he spends. Likewise, neither the reported $400 million band transaction nor the 2019 charitable auction establishes his personal net worth.
