Some celebrities have joked about, rejected, or used Illuminati rumors in their art. Those remarks show how the conspiracy circulates in pop culture; they do not establish that a modern secret group controls celebrities. Here are documented examples, with a distinction between interview comments, lyrics, and claims repeated by secondary sources.
Katy Perry joked about wanting an invitation
In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, as quoted by The Independent, Perry said: “If the Illuminati exist, I would like to be invited.” She added, “I have no idea what it is. It sounds crazy.” The Independent also reported her joking about people spotting “strange triangles” in her hand motions. The conditional phrasing and joke make this a wry response to speculation, not an admission of membership.
Madonna’s reported remark about the “real Illuminati”
An undated Ivy.fm compilation attributes this line to Madonna, reproduced from a Rolling Stone interview: “People often accuse me of being a member of the Illuminati, but the thing is, I know who the real Illuminati are.” The wording is available here through secondary coverage, not a verified original interview. It is best treated as a reported quip rather than a confirmed verbatim centerpiece.
Beyoncé answered the rumor in a lyric
In “Formation,” Beyoncé sings, “Y’all haters corny with that Illuminati mess,” according to the same Ivy.fm compilation. This is an artistic response to the rumor, not an interview statement or evidence for the conspiracy.

Why hand signs and imagery get read as clues
Conspiracy accounts often interpret triangles, gestures, or other recurring visuals as coded signals. Perry’s triangle joke illustrates that pattern: a shape or hand motion can become part of a rumor narrative without demonstrating any connection to an organization. A satirical WatchMojo listicle names Perry, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West in its discussion of pop-culture claims. Its insinuations are examples of how such rumors are presented, not independent evidence that the claims are true.
Hip-hop references have a wider social context
Rob Brotherton, a Barnard College professor and author of Suspicious Minds, is quoted in the Ivy.fm compilation via Complex discussing why Illuminati language can resonate in hip-hop. He points to the genre’s role in addressing discrimination, poverty, and the criminal justice system, and suggests that noticing injustice can lead people to wonder whether something lies behind it. This context helps explain why artists and audiences may engage with the imagery; it does not support claims that a secret group controls performers. The precise wording in Ivy.fm is itself a secondary reproduction of the Complex interview.

These examples are not a definitive set of eight
The available documented examples vary in medium and source quality: Perry’s 2014 joke is reported from an interview, Beyoncé’s response is a lyric, and Madonna’s line is reproduced by a secondary compilation. They should not be treated as a verified original list of eight or as evidence for the alleged modern conspiracy. The historical Bavarian Illuminati, a late-eighteenth-century secret society, is a separate subject from contemporary claims about celebrity membership.
