In 2025, several clues gave Half-Life fans reasons to speculate that Valve might be working on another game in the series. The strongest was datamined material linked by an outside analyst to a project called HLX; a second, weaker clue was a translated artist’s anecdote about visiting an office where Half-Life 3 was supposedly being made. Neither was an announcement, and neither confirmed that HLX is Half-Life 3 or that any project would be released.
What were the reasons to believe Half-Life 3 might be happening in 2025?
The case rested on two reported clues, plus older comments showing that Valve had considered returning to Half-Life. They are reasons fans speculated—not seven independent confirmations. The distinction matters: rumors can suggest activity without establishing a game’s identity, status, or release.
1. Valve game data contained references associated with HLX
In February 2025, Ars Technica reported that Valve game-update data contained new variables and strings associated by dataminer Tyler McVicker with a project called HLX. The data is the most concrete strand of the 2025 speculation because it concerns material found in game updates, rather than a second-hand account of an office visit. But the connection to Half-Life 3 was an interpretation: Ars described HLX as widely assumed to be Half-Life 3, not as a confirmed title. Ars Technica’s February 2025 report.
2. An analyst read engine changes as signs of polish
McVicker also interpreted changes to Valve’s Source engine as optimization and polish that can happen late in production. That reading fueled the idea that a project might be advanced, but it remains analysis of update data—not a statement from Valve about HLX, Half-Life 3, or a development schedule. The strings do not establish how far along a game is.

3. A Valve-associated artist described an office visit
In remarks reported by PCGamesN in April 2025, concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy said in a Russian-language podcast that he had been in the room where Half-Life 3 was made. His statement was translated by a third party. Evstratiy clarified that he had not seen development itself: he saw an office, computers, and whiteboards. The timing of his visit was also unclear. PCGamesN’s report, updated April 16, 2025.
4. The anecdote seemed to point toward an effort, not a release
Even taken at face value, the artist’s account does not establish what the office was being used for, whether a game was actively in development when he visited, or whether it would ship. PCGamesN itself cautioned that evidence of an attempt would not guarantee a release. The anecdote is suggestive but indirect, and its limits are substantial.

5. Valve has expressed interest in returning to Half-Life
In 2019, Valve designer David Speyrer said many at Valve had wanted to return to the Half-Life universe, and that making Half-Life: Alyx “has only reinforced that.” He also said Valve would like to continue pushing forward. Those remarks show interest in the series after Alyx; they do not identify a sequel or announce Half-Life 3. Steam’s account of Speyrer’s comments.
6. Earlier Half-Life projects show why fans remain alert to signs of activity
A 2017 Game Informer interview with an anonymous Valve developer described multiple separate efforts imagined as Half-Life 3 or Episode 3. Some were scrapped or shifted into other projects. The developer’s blunt summary was: “Valve has never announced a Half-Life 3.” The history helps explain both the interest in new clues and why signs of an internal effort cannot be treated as proof of a finished game. 7. The clues fit a possible project—but did not corroborate one another with official confirmation
HLX data and the office anecdote came from different sources and have different strengths, but neither amounts to Valve confirming the project or naming it Half-Life 3. PC Gamer’s rumor chronology likewise characterizes HLX as an ambiguous codename, not definitive proof. PC Gamer’s Half-Life rumor chronology.
How strong was the evidence?
| Clue | Provenance | What it could support | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| HLX references | Valve game-update data reported by Ars Technica; interpretation by dataminer Tyler McVicker | That update data contained references associated with a project called HLX | That HLX is Half-Life 3, or that Valve announced or dated a game |
| Engine changes | McVicker’s interpretation of Source engine changes, as reported by Ars Technica | A possible reading of optimization and polish as late-stage work | The project’s actual development stage or release prospects |
| Office anecdote | Evstratiy’s Russian-language podcast remarks, translated by a third party and reported by PCGamesN | That he said he had visited an office associated in his remark with Half-Life 3 | That he witnessed development, or that the visit proves an active project will ship |
| Valve’s earlier comments | Interviews and remarks from 2017 and 2019 | Past Half-Life efforts and interest in returning to the universe | A specific sequel announcement or a current release plan |
Measured by provenance, the datamined material is more concrete than the translated office anecdote. Measured by directness, however, both require interpretation: the data does not name a confirmed game, while the artist said he did not see development. On the key question—whether Valve confirmed Half-Life 3—neither provides corroboration.

Was Half-Life 3 confirmed or released in 2025?
No official Valve announcement of Half-Life 3 appears in the 2025 reports covered here. HLX remained an interpretation of internal references, and Evstratiy’s remark was an indirect, translated anecdote with limited detail. The evidence supports saying that fans had reasons to speculate about a possible project; it does not support saying that Valve confirmed Half-Life 3 or that it was certain to release.
