The announcement was published the next day. Their son Louis was born in March 2023, and their second son, Oliver, arrived in November 2024.
How Gelmi announced the pregnancy
During the 7NEWS Melbourne broadcast, anchor Rebecca Maddern asked Gelmi whether she was keeping a secret. Gelmi then shared the news: “Kane and I are very excited to announce we are expecting our first baby early next year,” she said, according to 7NEWS’s report published on 3 October 2022.
Gelmi also thanked her colleagues for their support while she had been unwell: “A big thank you to Seven because I have been quite unwell but everyone has been lovely.” Maddern responded, “So thrilled for you, you are glowing.”
What was known at the time
The announcement came after Lambert retired from playing in July 2022. The contemporaneous 7NEWS report described him as a three-time Tigers premiership player and attributed his retirement to a debilitating hip injury. It said Gelmi and Lambert had become romantically involved around the beginning of 2021.
