These seven films show why Dennis Hopper’s movie legacy cannot be reduced to one role or one genre. “Masterpiece” is a critical judgment, not an award category: this selection weighs Hopper’s work as an actor and director, each film’s distinctive achievement, and its lasting recognition. Easy Rider is the clearest starting point; the other six reveal a wider, less predictable career.

Seven films, chosen for different strengths

Hopper’s filmography moves between directing and acting. He directed and starred in Easy Rider and Out of the Blue, while The Last Movie shows a more formally adventurous side of his filmmaking. In the remaining selections, his performances stand out within films directed by others. This is not a definitive ranking: the films represent distinct kinds of achievement, from festival recognition to indelible character work and preservation by the Library of Congress.

Film Hopper’s role What makes it essential
Easy Rider (1969) Director, actor, screenwriter Counterculture road film; Cannes first-work prize; National Film Registry selection
The Last Movie (1971) Director Risk-taking, self-reflexive work that extends beyond his debut
The American Friend (1977) Actor A major performance in a European art-film setting
Apocalypse Now (1979) Actor A vivid supporting role in a formally ambitious war epic
Out of the Blue (1980) Director, actor Raw punk-era drama with Linda Manz at its center
Blue Velvet (1986) Actor A frightening, unforgettable turn as Frank Booth
Hoosiers (1986) Actor Restrained sports-drama performance; Hopper earned a supporting-actor Oscar nomination

1. Easy Rider (1969)

Easy Rider is the best answer to “What is Dennis Hopper’s best movie?” if the question means the film that most completely connects his acting and directing legacies. Hopper directed, co-wrote, and starred in the road film, which follows two bikers traveling across the United States. The Festival de Cannes lists him in all three roles and records the film’s 1969 Prize for the First Work. The Criterion Collection identifies it as his directorial debut, and the Library of Congress later selected it for the National Film Registry.

Its counterculture-era force is part of its importance, not a requirement that every viewer find it flawless or personally compelling. The film’s open-road movement and encounters across America make it a defining period work as well as a landmark in Hopper’s career. Sony’s film page identifies it as a classic and notes an original-screenplay Oscar nomination; its listed home-video formats include Blu-ray and DVD.

2. The Last Movie (1971)

After the success of Easy Rider, Hopper made a more difficult and unconventional film. The Last Movie is a choice for viewers interested in cinema that experiments with form and calls attention to the act of filmmaking itself. Its reputation should not be inferred from archival preservation alone: the Academy Film Archive’s Dennis Hopper Trust Collection documents 35mm prints and original picture and track negatives, establishing that materials are held, not that critics agree on a single verdict.

Its place here is as evidence that Hopper’s ambitions as a director did not end with his debut. It offers a challenging counterpoint to the directness and cultural reach of Easy Rider.

3. The American Friend (1977)

In The American Friend, Hopper’s work belongs to a quieter, more ambiguous register than his most explosive screen appearances. The Whitney Museum’s Hopper biography and a La Cinémathèque française retrospective both include the film among his notable roles. Its presence on this list broadens the picture of his acting career beyond American counterculture and Hollywood genre films, showing him in an internationally oriented art-cinema context.

4. Apocalypse Now (1979)

Hopper’s appearance in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now is a memorable supporting performance within a film built on disorientation, scale, and moral unease. He plays a photojournalist encountered by Captain Willard’s mission. The Academy describes the film’s ten-year path to the screen and records its Academy Awards for cinematography and sound; those wins belong to the film and its credited collaborators, not to Hopper individually. The Library of Congress also selected Apocalypse Now for the National Film Registry.

Hopper’s presence sharpens the film’s portrait of a world in which violence and spectacle have become difficult to separate. It is an acting-led choice, not a Hopper-directed film.

5. Out of the Blue (1980)

Out of the Blue puts Hopper back behind the camera, directing and acting in a raw punk-era family drama. The British Film Institute identifies Linda Manz as central to the film, and its volatile energy makes it a striking contrast with the more widely known Easy Rider. Cannes included it in competition in 1980, a significant festival recognition for Hopper’s work as a director.

This is one of the list’s strongest choices for readers who want to see Hopper’s filmmaking beyond his most famous title: abrasive, intimate, and focused on damaged lives rather than a broad generational journey.

6. Blue Velvet (1986)

Hopper’s Frank Booth in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet is a terrifying performance built around menace, volatility, and sudden shifts in control. The Whitney Museum and La Cinémathèque française both list the film among his major roles. Hopper did not direct Blue Velvet; its place here rests on the force of his acting and the way the character became one of his defining screen creations.

The performance shows how effectively Hopper could make an outsider figure feel both grotesque and dangerous, rather than merely eccentric.

7. Hoosiers (1986)

Hoosiers offers a marked contrast to Hopper’s roles as volatile outsiders. His performance as Shooter, a troubled man whose relationship with his son is bound up with alcohol and basketball, is vulnerable and measured. The Whitney Museum records Hopper’s Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this role. The nomination was Hopper’s, not a film-wide award; the Library of Congress separately selected Hoosiers for the National Film Registry.

Its inclusion shows the range of his acting: Hopper could dominate a scene with frightening unpredictability, but he could also make a damaged character’s struggle moving without turning it into a spectacle.

How to choose where to start

  • For the clearest overview of Hopper’s dual career: watch Easy Rider, where he directed and acted.
  • For his directing beyond the debut: try Out of the Blue, then The Last Movie if you want a more formally challenging film.
  • For a major performance in a larger ensemble: choose Apocalypse Now or The American Friend.
  • For his most unsettling screen presence: watch Blue Velvet.
  • For a more humane, restrained role: choose Hoosiers.

Why these seven belong together

No single measure makes a film a masterpiece. Hopper’s Cannes recognition for Easy Rider, his continuing directorial work, an Oscar nomination for Hoosiers, and the registry selections of Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, and Hoosiers are different forms of recognition—not a shared ranking system. Taken together, these films make the case for Hopper as a singular screen actor and a director whose work ranged from the canonical to the challenging.
