These seven visit options bring true-crime history to life through a former prison, historical sites, a notorious house, a cemetery, a museum and a guided walk. They span five destinations—not an objective worldwide ranking—and balance case history with different levels of theatrical or paranormal framing. Check current schedules and booking requirements before setting out.

How to choose among these seven places

The options below are grouped by destination, not ranked. Salem and Fall River are separate Massachusetts stops; London has two distinct ways to explore the same case; and Alcatraz is a prison-history visit rather than a murder-themed attraction. Compare them by format, time commitment, access requirements and how they present historical evidence versus spooky entertainment.

Visit option Format and focus Time or access details
Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Bay Former federal penitentiary; self-guided audio and staff- or volunteer-led programming Audio tour included with ferry ticket; ferry logistics require planning
Salem, Massachusetts Witch-trial history sites and museum or expert-led walks Schedules and timed entry vary by attraction and season
Lizzie Borden House, Fall River Historic house tour, with additional paranormal-themed experiences Operator lists a 90-minute house tour; entry requires a tour or reservation
Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River Cemetery tour focused on Borden family graves and local history About 1.5 miles from the house, according to its operator; verify schedule and meeting point
Villisca Axe Murder House, Iowa Historic house tours, cemetery visits and overnight experience Overnight stay is in a house without plumbing or electricity
Jack the Ripper Museum, London Indoor exhibits on victims, suspects, investigation and East End life Visit London suggests one to two hours
Jack the Ripper East London walking tour, London Guided outdoor walk through places associated with the case Visit London lists a 90-minute tour and age guidance of 12+

Alcatraz Island: prison and justice history

Alcatraz offers a strong option for visitors interested in incarceration and the history of the U.S. justice system, rather than a themed murder attraction. The National Park Service describes staff- and volunteer-led programming, along with a self-guided cellhouse audio tour available in multiple languages. The audio tour covers the penitentiary era from 1934 to 1963 and is included with the ferry ticket, according to the NPS.

Plan around the ferry: check current booking, transportation and accessibility information with the National Park Service visitor-planning page before you go. The NPS guided-tours page describes available programming and was last updated February 18, 2025, so confirm details close to your visit.

Salem: the 1692 witch trials and their interpretation

Salem’s history attractions offer several approaches to the 1692 witch trials. Salem’s tourism organization lists the Witch House, Witch Dungeon Museum and Salem Maritime National Historical Park among the city’s attractions. The Salem attractions listing is a useful starting point for choosing among them.

The Peabody Essex Museum also lists walking tours, including a witch-trial tour narrated by curators and experts, as well as seasonal tours. Check the museum’s events calendar and individual attraction listings for current dates, timed tickets and seasonal availability.

Keep the historical frame in view: the accused were prosecuted in the context of the 1692 trials, not convicted of modern criminal offenses. Salem’s offerings range from historical interpretation to commercial spooky entertainment, so check what a particular tour emphasizes before booking.

Fall River: Lizzie Borden House and Oak Grove Cemetery

Lizzie Borden House

The house in Fall River is associated with the 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. Its operator offers a 90-minute house tour covering the family, daily routines and events surrounding the murders, along with scheduled evening ghost tours and ghost hunts. Because the venue combines historical interpretation with paranormal framing, distinguish documented history from claims about hauntings.

Visitors cannot enter the house without a tour or reservation, according to the operator’s tour information. Availability depends on demand and booking, so check directly before traveling.

Oak Grove Cemetery

The same operator offers a separate cemetery tour that covers Borden family graves and other local history. The cemetery is approximately 1.5 miles from the house, according to the operator. Treat it as its own stop in a Fall River itinerary, and confirm the tour schedule, meeting place and cemetery rules in advance.

Villisca Axe Murder House: a historic site with an unusual overnight

The Villisca Axe Murder House in Iowa is tied to the 1912 killing of eight people, including six children. The operator describes the case as unsolved and offers daytime self-guided tours, private guided tours, cemetery tours and overnight stays.

The overnight is not a conventional lodging experience: the historic house has no plumbing or electricity. The operator says a restroom is available next door and provides a power bank. Review the venue’s current visit information and conditions before booking, and choose a daytime tour if those overnight arrangements do not suit you.

London: two ways to explore the Jack the Ripper case

Jack the Ripper Museum

The museum at 12 Cable Street in Whitechapel presents the victims, suspects and investigation alongside the life of the East End in 1888. Visit London describes exhibits that include newspaper reports and artifacts, with a suggested visit duration of one to two hours.

Jack the Ripper East London walking tour

A guided walk offers a different experience, connecting Whitechapel and other East End locations associated with the case. Visit London lists a 90-minute duration and age guidance of 12+ for the tour. The museum and walk are distinct options within London, not separate destinations.

Use Visit London’s Jack the Ripper listing to review visitor information for the museum and tour. Hours, prices, tickets, schedules and age guidance can change; confirm current details before visiting.

Planning a trip around the shortlist

  • For one city with two formats: London pairs an indoor museum visit with an outdoor case-history walk.
  • For two linked Fall River stops: the house and cemetery can form a separate itinerary, but the cemetery tour is not the same as entering the house.
  • For a Massachusetts history trip: Salem and Fall River are separate stops; allow for travel between them rather than treating them as one attraction area.
  • For a single-site visit: Alcatraz requires ferry planning, while Villisca offers several tour formats at the historic house.
  • Before booking: verify live hours, ticket rules, tour schedules, age guidance and access details with the venue or official visitor source. These practical details can change.
