These seven production facts trace how that premise shaped the film’s mythology, songs and tightly coordinated animated performances.
1. Maggie Kang originated the film and co-directed it
Kang says she pitched the project to Sony Pictures Animation, which was looking for something culturally different. She co-directed the film with Chris Appelhans, according to Sony Pictures Animation’s film page. In an interview published by Korea.net on August 13, 2025, Kang described the project as beginning with what she wanted to see in animation.
2. Korean mythology and demonology helped shape the premise
Kang says she wanted to see Korean culture represented in animation, so she looked into Korean mythology and landed on demonology as a starting point for the supernatural story. She described that path at Netflix’s Creative Asia event during the Busan International Film Festival, as reported by ContentAsia: “So when it came time for me to direct a movie and pitch one, I started to think about what I wanted to see in animation, which was Korean culture, and so I looked at our mythology. I was doing a lot of research, and for some reason, I landed on demonology”.
That is Kang’s account of the creative starting point, not a complete account of Korean mythology or culture.

3. The hunters became performers as well as fighters
Kang says that once she considered what the demon hunters might do beyond fighting, K-pop became the answer. Connecting the characters to performance expanded the project into a musical and made room for greater spectacle. “And it really changed everything,” she said. “The movie instantly became larger in scale. It became a musical, and there was just more spectacle.” ContentAsia reported her remarks.
4. The film’s Korean references include places, food and a tiger
Kang has pointed to Derpy the tiger, taekwondo, Korean locations and landmarks, and food as details she wanted to include. These are examples she chose to describe in discussing the film; they should not be taken as an exhaustive representation of Korean culture. Her comments appear in the ContentAsia report.

5. “Golden” carries character and plot information
In Netflix Tudum’s oral history of the film’s music, the creators explain that “Golden” introduces personal struggles for all three HUNTR/X members and reveals Rumi’s half-demon identity. The effort to reach the song’s high note also becomes part of the plot, rather than simply a vocal showcase. The song recurs as Rumi’s story unfolds and comes to a head in the finale.
6. The music collaboration spanned four cities
Danny Chung, an A&R representative and lyricist at THEBLACKLABEL, describes weekly meetings with the directors and producer involving collaborators in Korea, New York, Los Angeles and Bangkok. He says the filmmakers emphasized narrative-driven storytelling while the music team worked to preserve the songs’ K-pop identity. In Netflix Tudum’s interview, Chung called the approach unfamiliar territory: “K-pop hasn’t been applied to this [movie-musical] type of thing in this type of way, at this type of level,” he said. “It was uncharted territory, unblazed trails.”

7. Animated performances had to work as one system
Sony Group’s production feature describes the challenge of bringing choreography, dialogue, performance, camera and timing together. Animation Director Josh Beveridge summarized the coordination this way: “Every aspect—performance, camera, timing—had to interlock like a machine.” The line captures why a musical number in animation involves more than drawing dance moves: the performance must fit the scene’s camera and timing as well as its choreography.
