Spoiler warning: This guide covers major events from Season 2, Episode 4, “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” including the Battle at Rook’s Rest. The episode’s central question is what the battle costs both sides—and whether Aegon survives.
1. Rook’s Rest becomes the episode’s pivotal battle
Criston Cole’s campaign brings the Greens’ forces to Rook’s Rest, a castle in the Crownlands. The Blacks answer with a dragon, turning the clash into the episode’s defining set piece. HBO’s official “Inside the Episode” feature frames the battle as the culmination of escalating tensions.
2. Rhaenys flies in Rhaenyra’s place
Rhaenyra initially offers to go to Rook’s Rest herself, but her council persuades her not to risk the queen. Rhaenys volunteers instead, riding Meleys into the fight. Sky’s episode recap reports that Rhaenys and Meleys are killed in the battle.
3. Aegon is badly injured, but the episode does not confirm his death
Aegon takes Sunfyre to the battlefield and is caught in the dragon fight. He is later found badly injured. The episode closes without establishing whether he will live; Sky describes his status as unconfirmed, and TheWrap calls the ending a cliffhanger. The accurate answer to “Is Aegon dead?” at this point is that the episode leaves his fate unresolved.

4. Aemond’s role in Aegon’s injuries is open to interpretation
Aemond arrives on Vhagar during the battle, and the staging leaves room for viewers to question how much regard he has for his brother’s safety. Showrunner Ryan Condal said Aegon was “pretty clearly collateral damage in the action,” while acknowledging that the scene could seem ambiguous. That is Condal’s interpretation, not a separately confirmed statement of Aemond’s intent.
5. The war continues beyond Rook’s Rest
The battle is only one part of the episode’s movement across Westeros.
Daemon at Harrenhal
Daemon is at Harrenhal trying to gather an army. He encounters Alys Rivers amid hallucinations, but the episode does not settle whether Alys is what she claims to be or whether she is influencing him. Sky quotes Condal expressing uncertainty on those questions; they remain mysteries, not established explanations.
Rhaenyra’s attempt at peace fails
Rhaenyra’s secret meeting with Alicent does not avert the conflict. She returns to Dragonstone believing that war is now necessary.

Before the battle, Aegon resents being shut out of war planning, while Aemond is taking a more active role. Alicent is also unsettled by what Rhaenyra told her about Viserys’s final words. These tensions help explain the political pressure surrounding the battle, but they are separate from what the episode confirms about the casualties at Rook’s Rest.
How long did the Rook’s Rest sequence take to make?
In a July 7, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Condal said the sequence took “over a year of work to execute” from beginning to end. That is his attributed production account, not an independently audited schedule.

Optional further reading
Readers curious about the wider Targaryen civil war can look to George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which provides broader context for the conflict and Alys Rivers. The television adaptation may differ from the book’s details.
