They cover very different moods: an intimate family drama, a cold-case investigation, a first-love romance, an interlocking thriller and a snowy Scandinavian mystery. “Underrated” here is a personal recommendation, not a measured ranking of how many people have watched each show. Netflix’s own hidden-gems feature describes its selections as titles with niche followings and critical acclaim, but does not rank their recognition. Check your local Netflix catalog, since recommendations can vary by region.

1. Asura is a family drama built around a secret
Four sisters discover that their father has been carrying on a long-running affair, then decide to keep it from their mother. The premise gives Asura a tense family fault line, but its appeal is less about a puzzle to solve than about watching the sisters navigate what they know and what they choose to protect.
Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the seven-episode Japanese series is based on a novel and reimagines Kuniko Mukōda’s 1970s miniseries. It’s my pick for viewers who prefer emotionally observant family stories to high-concept plotting. Netflix Tudum discusses the series in its December 11, 2025 Hidden Gems of 2025 feature.
2. Dept. Q turns a career setback into a cold-case investigation
Matthew Goode plays Edinburgh detective Carl Mørck, whose reassignment to a cold-case unit follows an on-duty shooting that leaves his partner paralyzed and another officer dead. That difficult starting point gives the series a brooding tone; its investigations also make it a good fit for viewers who like detective ensembles and cases that unfold over time.

Dept. Q adapts the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. Netflix Tudum reported that the series was renewed in its December 11, 2025 Hidden Gems of 2025 feature. An exact episode count is not stated there, so it’s better to choose it for the cold-case premise than for a specific time commitment.
3. FOREVER follows the milestones of a first relationship
In this eight-episode romance, teen athletes Keisha and Justin navigate the milestones of their first relationship. Set in 2018 Los Angeles, the series is a contemporary take on Judy Blume’s novel Forever, created by Mara Brock Akil; Regina King directed the first episode.

Choose it for a relationship-focused story rather than a mystery or crime plot. If you want to continue with the source material after watching, Blume’s novel is a natural companion. Netflix Tudum reported a second-season renewal in its December 11, 2025 Hidden Gems of 2025 feature.
4. Karma links six people through a plan gone wrong
A desperate plan involving a loan shark goes wrong and entangles six people in a chain of misdeeds. Karma is a six-installment South Korean slow-burn thriller, based on Choi See-hun’s webtoon. Its appeal is in watching separate lives and bad decisions gradually lock together, rather than following a single straightforward investigation.

5. The Åre Murders pairs a missing-person case with a wintry setting
In the Swedish ski town of Åre, two detectives investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl. The snowy location gives this crime story a distinct atmosphere, while the missing-person case supplies a clear entry point for viewers looking for a small-town mystery.
