Some viewers dislike Star Trek: Starfleet Academy because its campus-centered coming-of-age story, contemporary dialogue, uneven character and plot work, and tonal mix do not match what they want from Star Trek. These are reported criticisms, not proof that most fans dislike the series: the available reviews include praise as well as reservations, and no representative measure of fan opinion establishes how widespread the backlash is.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows young cadets pursuing Starfleet careers as they navigate friendships, rivalries, first love, instructors, and a threat to the Academy and Federation. The series premiered on Paramount+ in the United States on January 15, 2026, with a 10-episode season released weekly. The official announcement lists availability in the United States, United Kingdom, Latin America, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and Canada. Star Trek’s announcement describes the show’s premise and launch.
Why do some fans dislike Starfleet Academy?
1. The school setting can crowd out exploration
The Academy premise is a deliberate shift toward campus life and young-adult drama. For viewers who come to Star Trek for journeys into unfamiliar worlds, that focus can feel earthbound. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times notes that enjoyment may depend on interest in a story about college-age characters, even when it unfolds in the future and sometimes in space. His review describes pranks, rivalries, romance, and lessons in teamwork and discipline. TVLine similarly observes that the series can feel classroom-bound when interstellar travel is part of a viewer’s expectation of the franchise. Read the Los Angeles Times review and TVLine’s review.
This is an audience-fit objection, not evidence that a youth-focused Star Trek story is inherently a mistake. Someone looking for relationships and cadet life may welcome the premise; someone hoping for a more exploratory adventure may find it limiting.

2. The dialogue can sound too contemporary
The San Francisco Chronicle reviewer argues that some dialogue feels distractingly present-day and questions whether current slang is plausible in the 32nd century. For viewers attentive to how language helps make a fictional future feel distinct, that choice can weaken the worldbuilding. It remains a reviewer’s judgment about voice, not a settled rule about how people in the future should speak. The Chronicle review discusses the concern.
3. Characters and storytelling may feel uneven
The same Chronicle review describes some cadets as broad archetypes and says the show struggles to align its ambitions with narrative clarity. TVLine also sees promise alongside familiar stumbling blocks in recent Star Trek storytelling. These critiques concern execution: viewers may find the characters or plot less developed or clear than the premise suggests. Neither review establishes that every character or episode has the same problem.

4. The tone can shift awkwardly between school comedy and franchise seriousness
TVLine points to a contrast between young-adult school activities and veteran characters, as well as a mix of corny jokes, reverence for Starfleet, and visual flourishes. Some viewers may find those elements at odds with one another; others may enjoy the contrast. The Chronicle’s complaint about contemporary dialogue can feed into the same reaction, since a present-day voice may make a future setting feel less cohesive.
5. Some criticism is about novelty, canon, and franchise fatigue
TVLine argues that a new cast and setting still encounter familiar pitfalls associated with recent Trek. A WatchMojo roundup collects broader complaints about production values, perceived lack of ambition, canon, writing, campus culture, the YA focus, and franchise fatigue. That roundup is a synthesis of criticism, not a fan survey or a definitive audit of canon. These objections vary: one viewer may want a more distinctive approach, while another may object to a particular story or continuity choice. WatchMojo’s roundup covers the range of complaints.

What early backlash reports do—and do not—show
On January 16, 2026, ComicBook.com reported a large gap between critics’ and audience scores shortly after the two-episode premiere and described a review-bombing campaign. The report also cautioned that it was impossible at that point to distinguish genuine criticism from malicious review-bombs. It is a launch-period snapshot, not a current rating or proof that negative reactions were inauthentic. ComicBook.com’s January 16 report describes that uncertainty.
So “fans hate Starfleet Academy” is best read as shorthand for visible negative reactions, not a claim about the fanbase as a whole. The available reviews identify specific reasons for some viewers’ objections; they do not establish what share of Star Trek fans dislikes the series.
