Make children part of the Passover Seder, not just an audience: give them a manageable job, invite them to help tell the Exodus story, and turn the ritual’s symbols into things they can notice and ask about. These five family-friendly adaptations fit around the Haggadah’s ordered service; they are fresh ways to participate, not claims of universally new or required customs.
Keep the Seder’s story at the center
The Seder follows an order guided by the Haggadah, with Maggid devoted to telling the Exodus story. Activities work best when they help children listen, ask questions, or connect with that story—not when they replace it with an unrelated game. Chabad.org’s overview of the Seder’s 15 steps can help families see where an activity might fit.
Adapt each idea to children’s ages and your family’s Seder practice. Toddlers and preschoolers may do best with brief turns, simple jobs, songs with motions, child-sized seating, and flexibility about timing. A child-friendly Haggadah is optional; families can also follow their usual Haggadah while offering children a small role.
Five kid-friendly Passover traditions to try
1. Let children co-host one preparation task
Give each child a concrete job before guests arrive: help prepare an appropriate food, arrange or explore Seder plate items, make salt water, or decorate the table with drawings. A small responsibility gives children an early connection to the evening without asking them to manage the whole event. For young children, Reform Judaism’s guidance for a Seder with 2- and 3-year-olds suggests food preparation and displaying children’s artwork; the Orthodox Union’s kid-friendly Seder ideas include planning and exploring the Seder plate.

2. Tell the Exodus with a short role or safe prop
Invite a child to act out one story beat, take a simple character role, or use a puppet, blocks, or costume piece to make a moment in the Exodus vivid. Keep the role brief so children can rejoin the Haggadah’s flow. Choose age-appropriate objects, and avoid anything that could be mistaken for food or create a hazard. Chabad.org’s kid-friendly Seder tips suggest skits or assigned roles, while Reform Judaism describes pretend play and storytelling props for young children.
3. Make the Seder plate a discovery activity
Before or during the Seder, invite children to look closely at the plate’s foods and symbols. Ask what they notice, what they wonder about, or which item they would like to learn about. The Orthodox Union calls this a “Seder Plate Discovery Zone.” Chabad.org explains that the ceremonial foods are arranged on the plate and that the Seder is structured around recounting the Exodus. Keep the conversation connected to the meanings and story your family observes.

Reform Judaism and the Orthodox Union both recommend adapting Seder activities to help children stay involved.
5. Add clues to the afikoman search
Keep the familiar search for the hidden afikoman, but prepare a few simple clues so children have a trail to follow. Clues can be spoken or drawn, depending on age, and adults can join the hunt too. Reform Judaism describes children searching for the hidden afikoman; Chabad.org suggests turning the search into a clue-based activity.

How to adapt the ideas without overloading the evening
- For toddlers and preschoolers: Choose one short job or activity at a time, use safe props, and allow movement and breaks.
- For children who can read: Offer a brief scavenger list, a role to read aloud, or a clue to prepare for the afikoman search.
- For mixed ages: Pair a simple picture-based task with a question or reading role so each child can participate at a comfortable level.
- For any family: Select activities that fit your Haggadah and practice; not every idea needs to be used at one Seder.
An optional custom: add an orange to the Seder plate
Some families add an orange as a contemporary expression of inclusion; it is not a required or universal Seder ritual. In an April 23, 2024 report, Axios quoted Rabbi Sarah Krinsky of Adas Israel Congregation describing the orange as often associated with inclusion, particularly for women and/or LGBTQ+ people. Krinsky also described the Seder as a teaching tool that invites children’s questions and discussion. Families considering an added custom can explain what it means to them and how it fits their own practice. Read the Axios report on newer Seder plate customs.
Would a children’s Haggadah help?
A children’s or family Haggadah can give younger participants an accessible way to follow the story while older children and adults use a fuller text. It is an option, not a prerequisite: a family can also use its usual Haggadah and bring children in through the activities above. Reform Judaism’s guide to Haggadot for young children describes books designed to support children’s engagement; the Jewish Theological Seminary’s guide to meaningful Seders for children also recommends children’s books and Haggadot.
