The available publisher and Nobel Prize materials establish the novel’s setting and context, but do not provide verifiable passages from its text. Here are three accurately attributed quotations about the book and its author instead—clearly distinguished from lines in the novel—along with a concise guide to the novel and its English edition.

These quotations are useful entry points to Krasznahorkai’s work, but none is a passage from The Melancholy of Resistance.

I don’t trust short sentences.
— László Krasznahorkai, quoted in Nobel Prize Outreach’s 2025 educational manuscript. It offers a glimpse of the author’s approach to prose; it is not a quotation from the novel. -

for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.
— The Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 award citation. The award recognized Krasznahorkai’s body of work, not this novel alone.
What The Melancholy of Resistance is about
The novel unfolds in a small Hungarian town unsettled by the arrival of a traveling circus. Its advertised spectacle is the stuffed body of the world’s largest whale. Rumors of sinister intent spread, fear grows, and residents reach for systems that might restore order, including music, cosmology, and fascism. New Directions’ synopsis identifies Mrs. Eszter as plotting a takeover, her weakling husband, and Valuska as the tender, hapless center of the story. New Directions’ book page

Nobel Prize educational material places the story after the fall of the Soviet Union and notes the association between Krasznahorkai’s flowing style and his long sentences. That is a useful stylistic orientation, not a rule that every passage or sentence takes the same form. Nobel Prize Outreach’s 2025 educational material
How to find and verify quotations from the novel
For lines suitable to quote, consult the English text rather than relying on summaries, reviews, or descriptions of the book. The publisher identifies George Szirtes as the translator of its English edition. Because a novel’s wording depends on its translation and edition, record the edition and page number for each passage you select; do not attribute publisher copy or commentary to the novel.

What the Nobel recognition means
Krasznahorkai received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature for his oeuvre. The Nobel citation’s praise of art amid apocalyptic terror can help frame a reader’s approach to this novel, but it should not be presented as a prize awarded specifically for The Melancholy of Resistance.
