Attendance figures reported at the time were not consistent and should not be treated as a single agreed count. ABC News Australia attributed an estimate of 200,000 registrations to local media; Christianity Today cited a local police estimate of about 100,000 people, including two overflow areas; and Le Monde reported approximately 65,000 gathered. These are differently described, source-attributed figures, not interchangeable measures. Le Monde’s report provides the latter estimate.

How the remarks were received afterward
The contrast between forgiveness and hostility toward opponents continued to shape discussion of the memorial. In later Associated Press reporting, theologian Miroslav Volf, a professor at Yale Divinity School, called Erika Kirk’s gesture “the outlier.” Rev. Thomas Berg, a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame’s McGrath Institute for Church Life, said, “I hope this is not a passing moment.” These were retrospective assessments, not remarks delivered at the service.
