The forgotten WWII drama is A Bridge Too Far (1977), Richard Attenborough’s large-scale account of Operation Market Garden, the Allied effort to secure a bridgehead in the Netherlands in 1944. Its subject is one campaign, not the whole of World War II; its appeal lies in showing how an ambitious military plan unraveled across a broad cast of soldiers and commanders.
What is A Bridge Too Far about?
The film dramatizes Operation Market Garden, the 1944 Allied attempt to push behind German lines in the Netherlands and seize key bridges. The British Film Institute describes the operation as a doomed attempt and the film as an account of the campaign’s failure. That focus makes the movie a military epic about the limits and consequences of a particular plan, rather than a general survey of the war. BFI film entry; BFI retrospective.

Who made the film, and what is it based on?
Richard Attenborough directed the film, and William Goldman wrote the screenplay. It is based on Cornelius Ryan’s book A Bridge Too Far. AFI’s catalog also documents the film’s production in the Netherlands. AFI Catalog entry.
Why does the story feel so expansive?
Attenborough assembles a large ensemble around the campaign, including Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Edward Fox, Elliott Gould, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford, and Liv Ullmann. Rather than following a single protagonist, the film moves among people involved in different parts of the operation. The scale helps convey the reach of the undertaking, while the many separate storylines can make its 1970s epic style feel deliberate and unhurried.

The length depends on which catalog or version is being cited. The BFI lists 175 minutes; AFI lists 176 minutes. The BBFC records a cinema classification entry of 175 minutes 45 seconds, classified on 25 May 1977, and also lists later home-entertainment versions with different durations. These are source- and version-specific figures, not a single universal runtime. BFI; AFI; BBFC.
How was it recognized?
AFI records BAFTA wins for Edward Fox as supporting actor, cinematography, soundtrack, and original film music. The catalog also lists nominations that include best film and direction. Those specifics show recognition in several categories without turning a set of awards into a claim of universal acclaim. AFI Catalog awards record.

Is it worth watching now?
It is a strong choice for viewers interested in how a major military operation is planned, dispersed across multiple fronts, and experienced by the people caught up in it. Its ensemble approach gives the campaign breadth, while its considerable running time asks for patience. Viewers seeking an intimate, single-character war story may find its attention divided; those drawn to large-scale historical dramas may value that breadth. The film’s reputation as “forgotten” or one of the best is an editorial judgment, not an objective ranking.
For a physical edition, the BBFC record confirms that home-entertainment versions exist, but it does not establish current stock, region compatibility, or which edition is best. Check the format and regional specifications before buying. BBFC version records.
