Romance movies can be funny, bittersweet, suspenseful, or even animated—and a love story doesn’t need a happy ending to be memorable. These 26 picks span classic Hollywood, international cinema, queer love stories, older romance, and films where romance shares the screen with another genre. Choose by mood rather than treating the list as a ranking.
Classic romances with lasting pull
Casablanca (1942)
A wartime love triangle turns on sacrifice as much as desire. Its closing line, “This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” gives the film a farewell that still feels tender.
It Happened One Night (1934)
This quick-witted road comedy makes a mismatched pair’s bickering the engine of its romance, helping establish the screwball-comedy template.
Roman Holiday (1953)
Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck play strangers who share a day in Rome. The charm is in the brief freedom they find together, and in the quiet ache of what cannot last.

Two people promise to meet again after a transatlantic crossing. It’s an elegant choice for viewers who like longing, missed connections, and a romance built around a single rendezvous.
Now, Voyager (1942)
Bette Davis leads this drama about a woman’s transformation and the love she finds on her own terms. Its romance is inseparable from questions of independence and self-respect.
The Lady Eve (1941)
Barbara Stanwyck’s con artist and Henry Fonda’s sheltered heir collide in a sharp, mischievous comedy of deception and attraction.
City Lights (1931)
Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp falls for a blind flower seller in a silent comedy that makes generosity and yearning speak louder than dialogue.

Funny, warm, and offbeat love stories
Groundhog Day (1993)
A weatherman trapped in a time loop gradually becomes someone capable of loving another person well. The fantasy premise gives this comedy an unusually thoughtful take on change and connection.
Moonstruck (1987)
Set in an Italian American family in Brooklyn, this lively comedy follows a widow pulled toward her fiancé’s passionate younger brother. It balances big feelings with family humor.
Rank #2
Harold and Maude (1971)
A morbid young man and a free-spirited older woman form an unlikely bond. Its dark comedy and age-gap romance make it an eccentric, sometimes provocative pick rather than a conventional date-night story.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Two strangers feel connected before they have properly met, making this a natural choice for viewers who enjoy fated-feeling romance and old-fashioned courtship.

The Princess Bride (1987)
Swashbuckling adventure, fairy-tale humor, and devotion all meet in this playful story of Westley and Buttercup. The romance is central, but the movie has plenty to offer viewers who want action too.
WALL-E (2008)
Two robots build a connection largely through movement, expression, and sound rather than conversation. AFI calls it “one of the great screen romances” and says, “Not since Chaplin’s ’Little Tramp’ has so much story — so much emotion — been conveyed without words.”
Bittersweet, epic, and tragic romance
Gone with the Wind (1939)
This sweeping historical melodrama centers on Scarlett O’Hara’s volatile relationship with Rhett Butler against the upheaval of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Its racialized depiction of that history is deeply dated, so it is best approached as a major but troubling artifact of Hollywood’s past.
The Way We Were (1973)
Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford play people drawn together despite sharply different temperaments and politics. It’s for viewers who want a love story shaped by compromise and the passage of time.
Rank #3
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Against the upheaval of revolution and war, this sweeping period drama follows a doctor and poet whose love for Lara cannot be separated from the world around them.
Love Story (1970)
A young couple’s marriage faces class conflict and illness in this direct, emotionally intense romance. Go in expecting tragedy, not a light romantic comedy.
West Side Story (1961)
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet becomes a musical tragedy about young love amid rival New York street gangs. Its songs and choreography intensify the story’s urgency rather than softening its ending.
Titanic (1997)
James Cameron pairs a class-divided romance with a disaster epic. The relationship gives the spectacle its emotional center, while the doomed voyage sets the stakes.
Romance with another genre in the mix
Vertigo (1958)
Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological thriller follows a former detective drawn into an obsession. Its romance is unsettling and bound up with suspense, not a reassuring love story.
True Romance (1993)
This violent crime film follows a couple fleeing danger together. Choose it for a romance threaded through action and criminal chaos, not for a gentle or family-friendly mood.
Rank #4
Love & Basketball (2000)
Two aspiring basketball players grow up competing and falling in love. The sports drama gives their relationship a long arc, with ambition and partnership continually pulling against each other.
My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Gus Van Sant’s drama follows two young men on the margins, including a young man in love with his friend. It is an unconventional, often melancholy queer story rather than a standard romance.

Romance need not be the film’s only genre to be its emotional center. AFI describes the genre broadly as a romantic bond whose actions or intentions provide the heart of the narrative; its examples range from screwball comedy and time-loop comedy to psychological thriller and action. Its 2002 list also found that seven of its top ten love stories end with couples apart—a pattern specific to AFI’s selection, not a rule for romance films generally.
The list’s cross-generational and international range is deliberate: first love, adult partnerships, older companionship, and stories shaped by family or cultural expectations can all make romance the heart of a film.
