There is no definitive ranking of the best motorcycle movies: the films range from outlaw-biker dramas and counterculture road stories to racing documentaries, subculture portraits, and cult horror. This list is an editorial selection, not a consensus poll. It includes films in which motorcycles materially shape the plot, characters, subject, or visual style—not movies where a bike is merely background decoration.
The 25 picks below are organized by the experience they offer, rather than ranked from best to worst. Documentary and fiction films sit side by side, with each entry noting how central motorcycles are to it.
Outlaw bikers, gangs, and their aftermath
1. The Wild One (1953)
Type: Fiction drama · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Tense, rebellious
Directed by László Benedek, this drama made the postwar motorcycle gang a vivid screen presence. The BFI describes its lasting template: bikers enter a small town, unsettle its residents, and expose divisions already within the community. It is essential viewing for understanding the outlaw-biker image in popular culture, not a documentary portrait of motorcycle clubs. BFI’s account of biker-film history also notes that real bikers appeared in the cast and that some gang dialogue reportedly drew on conversations with extras.

2. The Wild Angels (1966)
Type: Biker-gang fiction · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Provocative, rough-edged
One of the films that pushed biker-gang stories further into exploitation cinema, The Wild Angels belongs to the wave that followed The Wild One. It offers a useful contrast with Benedek’s earlier small-town drama: the biker image becomes more confrontational and the film’s appeal lies partly in its deliberate excess. The BFI places it among the works that shaped the genre’s history.
3. Psychomania (1973)
Type: Cult horror · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Eerie, eccentric
This British biker-horror curiosity folds motorcycle gang culture into supernatural fantasy. Its place in a motorcycle watchlist shows how far the genre can travel beyond crime drama and road movies. The BFI includes it in its discussion of biker cinema’s evolution.

4. Stone (1974)
Type: Crime thriller · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Gritty
An Australian entry in the biker-film tradition, Stone centers the motorcycle-club milieu rather than using bikes as a passing visual flourish. It broadens a list otherwise likely to lean heavily on American outlaw mythology, and makes a strong choice for viewers interested in the genre beyond its best-known Hollywood examples.
5. The Loveless (1981)
Type: Roadside biker drama · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Spare, atmospheric
Set in a small Southern town, this stylized drama uses a group of bikers and their machines to create a portrait of tension, outsider identity, and uneasy encounters. Its measured, atmospheric approach is a counterpoint to the more sensational biker pictures in this section.

6. Easy Rider (1969)
Type: Counterculture road film · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Restless, searching
Dennis Hopper’s film follows Wyatt and Billy across the United States, making the ride itself the structure for a story about outsiders and the country they cross. The Criterion Collection highlights its radical editing, outsider-rock soundtrack, and Jack Nicholson’s performance; Criterion lists the film as a 1969 U.S. production, 95 minutes long, in English. Its influence on the American road film is substantial, and AFI selected it for both its original and 10th-anniversary lists of the greatest American films. AFI also recognized “Born to Be Wild” among the greatest songs featured in a film; that is recognition, not an award win. Criterion’s Easy Rider edition includes a high-definition restoration supervised by cinematographer László Kovács and a range of supplements, including commentaries and documentaries.

7. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
Type: Biographical road film · Motorcycle role: Substantial · Mood: Reflective, expansive
Based on the young Ernesto Guevara’s journey across South America with Alberto Granado, the film uses a motorcycle trip as the catalyst for encounters that reshape its travelers’ sense of the continent. The machine is important to the early journey, though the film’s focus extends beyond riding to travel, friendship, and observation.
8. One Week (2008)
Type: Road drama · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Contemplative
A man facing a life-changing diagnosis sets out on a motorcycle journey across Canada. The road trip gives the film a natural framework for questions of risk, regret, and what it means to choose one’s own direction. It is a quieter alternative to the rebel-road tradition.
9. The World’s Fastest Indian (2005)
Type: Biographical sports drama · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Uplifting
This drama follows New Zealander Burt Munro and his determination to take his modified Indian motorcycle to the Bonneville Salt Flats. The story turns on a rider’s relationship with a machine and the pursuit of speed, making it a natural pick for viewers who want an underdog story rather than outlaw mythology.
10. Mad Max (1979)
Type: Dystopian action · Motorcycle role: Substantial · Mood: Harsh, kinetic
Motorcycle gangs help define the film’s lawless world and supply a crucial source of danger, even as cars and road pursuit dominate the action. It earns a place for showing how bikes can shape a film’s visual identity and sense of threat without being the only vehicle at its center.
Motorcycle sport on film
11. On Any Sunday (1971)
Type: Sports documentary · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Energetic, affectionate
Featuring Steve McQueen, this documentary is a foundational portrait of motorcycle sport and the people who ride. Film scholars Sandra Martinez and Antonio Sanjuán call it perhaps the most important film about the motorcycle world in their historical survey; that is their assessment, not an objective consensus. Its focus on riders and racing makes it an essential counterweight to fiction about gangs and rebellion.

Type: Motorcycle-sport documentary · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Physical, competitive
Martinez and Sanjuán include Dirt in their survey of motorcycle films, placing it among works that make riding and sport the subject rather than a backdrop. It broadens the racing section beyond the road-racing world and suits viewers interested in the range of motorcycle competition.

This documentary follows the world of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, bringing the speed and competition of the sport to the foreground. It is a modern-era companion to older racing documentaries for viewers who want motorcycles as machines pushed to their limits.
15. TT3D: Closer to the Edge (2011)

Type: Youth and music drama · Motorcycle role: Substantial · Mood: Urgent, rebellious

21. Torque (2004)
Type: Action film · Motorcycle role: Central · Mood: Exaggerated, kinetic

How to choose your next motorcycle movie
- For a film-history starting point: begin with The Wild One, then watch Easy Rider to see two influential but distinct versions of the biker and road-film tradition.
- For sport and competition: choose On Any Sunday for a foundational portrait of motorcycle culture, then move to the Grand Prix or Isle of Man TT documentaries.
- For subculture and music: Quadrophenia and Scorpio Rising approach motorcycles through style, identity, and sound rather than conventional road adventure.
- For a lighter ride: Wild Hogs supplies broad comedy; The World’s Fastest Indian offers a more earnest underdog story.
Motorcycle cinema has never been one settled genre. A 2014 historical survey by Sandra Martinez and Antonio Sanjuán describes categories including biker and road films, scooter and soft-bike movies, rockers, mods and musicals, solitary heroes, and documentaries, biopics, and cartoons. The authors describe a database of more than 2,500 movies they assembled for their study; that figure is the size of their database, not a count of all motorcycle films.
