There is no definitive ranking of the best comic strips: influence, invention, humor, emotional range, and popularity do not always point to the same works. This selection brings together 25 strips that help explain how the form developed, from early newspaper experiments to modern character comedy. It is an editorial list, not a claim of universal critical consensus.
The choices draw on the Library of Congress’s historical surveys, which group comics by themes and their connections to politics, society, and popular culture rather than ranking them. The order below is not a scorecard.
How to read this list
A strong comic strip may change how a page works, tell stories over time, create memorable characters, or make readers laugh at everyday life. These picks reflect a mix of historical influence, formal or narrative innovation, cultural reach, and variety of style. Popularity is one measure, not the only one: the Library of Congress notes that Krazy Kat won critical acclaim despite not initially being popular.
The list focuses on newspaper comic strips and the traditions that shaped them. Older strips also need historical context: early comics often relied on ethnic and social stereotypes that readers should recognize rather than mistake for harmless period detail. The Library of Congress’s exhibition and overview provide a useful account of this history and its changing forms: “Featuring the Funnies” and “Comic Strips — Cartoon America”.

25 influential and enduring comic strips
1. Hogan’s Alley (The Yellow Kid)
Richard F. Outcault’s Hogan’s Alley, featuring the Yellow Kid, is a landmark in newspaper comics. The Library of Congress dates its appearance to May 5, 1895, and describes its page-wide simultaneous action and dialogue placed within the image as important innovations. It shows that the comic page was becoming more than a sequence of isolated jokes.
2. Mutt and Jeff
Bud Fisher’s strip helped establish the daily newspaper gag as a repeatable format centered on recognizable characters. Its contrast between two very different men gave the jokes an instantly legible engine, while its early success helped make the continuing comic strip a regular feature of newspaper life.
3. Buster Brown
Richard F. Outcault’s mischievous boy and his dog Tige extended the appeal of the child-centered comic. The strip is worth remembering both for its place in early newspaper comics and as an example of how characters could travel beyond the page into a broader popular culture.
4. Little Nemo in Slumberland
Winsor McCay turned the Sunday comics page into a dream landscape. Nemo’s fantastical journeys gave McCay room for intricate architecture, visual spectacle, and sequences that build toward a recurring morning awakening. The strip remains a model of how the page itself can be part of the storytelling.

Sidney Smith’s The Gumps brought ongoing narrative and domestic characters to a mass newspaper audience. Its storylines encouraged readers to return for what happened next, helping demonstrate that a strip could work as serial entertainment as well as a self-contained gag.
6. Gasoline Alley
Frank King’s strip made an unusually consequential formal choice: characters could age in real time. After Skeezix arrived in 1921, the family’s life moved forward rather than resetting to an eternal present. That approach gave the strip a durable sense of memory, change, and generational continuity.

7. Krazy Kat
George Herriman made a spare, shifting desert landscape feel inexhaustible. The familiar cycle of Ignatz Mouse throwing a brick at Krazy Kat and Officer Pupp intervening became a frame for wordplay, visual experimentation, and a highly individual comic universe. The Library of Congress notes the gap between its limited initial popularity and its critical acclaim—a useful reminder that artistic influence cannot be measured by readership alone. See the Library of Congress’s account of George Herriman’s Krazy Kat.
8. Popeye (Thimble Theatre)
Elzie Segar’s Thimble Theatre began before Popeye became its defining character. Popeye’s arrival transformed the strip through his forceful voice, improbable strength, and confrontational humor. The work also illustrates how a supporting character can take over a comic’s world when readers respond to a personality more vividly than its original premise.

9. Blondie
Chic Young’s Blondie shifted from its early courtship premise into a long-running domestic comedy about Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead. Dagwood’s appetite, elaborate sandwiches, and collisions with work and family life supplied endlessly renewable material. Its durability comes from adapting a comic marriage to changing everyday routines.
10. Dick Tracy
Chester Gould’s detective strip made crime and pursuit central to newspaper serial storytelling. Its distinctive villains, cliffhangers, and hard-edged visual style gave readers a continuing adventure rather than a daily reset. It helped establish the detective strip as a recognizable genre of its own.
11. Little Orphan Annie
Harold Gray’s Little Orphan Annie mixed adventure, melodrama, and social commentary. Annie’s travels and encounters with the powerful gave the strip a broad canvas for its creator’s political outlook. Its history is a reminder that a comic could entertain while also presenting a pronounced view of society.
12. Terry and the Pirates
Milton Caniff’s adventure strip combined continuing plot, atmosphere, and carefully staged action. Its far-flung settings and ensemble of characters helped make the newspaper strip a vehicle for sustained adventure. The Library of Congress places it among the adventure serials that expanded the range of newspaper comics.

13. Li’l Abner
Al Capp’s comic about the residents of Dogpatch used broad caricature, invented customs, and elaborate running jokes to satirize American life. Its exaggerated world made room for social and political targets, while its characters and phrases became part of popular culture. Its humor also carries the stereotypes and assumptions of its era, which merit attention alongside its influence.
14. Nancy
Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy is a masterclass in clarity and economy. Strong silhouettes, controlled pacing, and carefully arranged visual information make the jokes readable at a glance without making them feel mechanically simple. The strip demonstrates how disciplined drawing can heighten a small comic idea.
15. Pogo
Walt Kelly’s swamp-dwelling animals offered lyrical language, elaborate wordplay, and political caricature. The Library of Congress credits Pogo with bringing political commentary into a nationally syndicated strip. Its combination of eccentric animal characters and pointed satire showed that a comic could be playful without being politically neutral.
16. Peanuts
Charles Schulz’s Peanuts debuted in newspapers on October 2, 1950. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and their friends made childhood a setting for anxiety, loss, wit, and social observation rather than uncomplicated sweetness. TIME’s account of the strip’s endurance emphasizes its recurring sense of futility and pathos alongside its humor; the Library of Congress describes it as one of the most successful and beloved strips. TIME reports that it produced more than 18,000 comic strips. TIME’s account of why Peanuts endures explores that emotional range.
17. The Family Circus
Bil Keane’s single-panel family comedy found humor in children’s logic, parental patience, and the small dramas of home life. Its recurring family setting made everyday routines legible and affectionate without requiring an ongoing plot. It represents a domestic, broadly accessible mode distinct from the more satirical family strips.
18. Doonesbury
Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury made contemporary politics and public life central to a continuing cast of characters. Its storylines follow social change rather than treating the news as a passing topical joke. A Library of Congress exhibition caption called it “one of the most provocative and innovative strips in American newspaper publishing,” a judgment that points to its unusual ambition as well as its political edge.

19. Garfield
Jim Davis’s Garfield built a highly efficient comic persona around appetite, laziness, and disdain for Monday. Its uncluttered setup and punchline made it easy to read across newspapers and cultures. The strip is a defining example of a character-driven gag whose personality is its most durable joke.
20. The Far Side
Gary Larson’s single-panel The Far Side made absurdity its own comic grammar. It often asks readers to infer a strange world from one image rather than follow a recurring story. Its playful reversals of human, animal, and scientific behavior widened the possibilities for newspaper humor.

Bill Watterson’s strip paired Calvin’s vivid imagination with the more grounded presence of Hobbes, whose status as a living tiger or stuffed toy shifts with perspective. It could move from energetic fantasy to quiet reflections on childhood and adult rules. The strip ran from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. Watterson resisted merchandising because he believed commercialization would conflict with the work’s spirit; TIME reports his explanation in its account of the strip’s history. TIME on Calvin and Hobbes and its first publication.
22. For Better or For Worse
Lynn Johnston’s family strip followed the Pattersons through changing stages of life, giving readers an extended view of relationships and growing up. Its willingness to let characters and circumstances develop placed it in a different tradition from strips that preserve a permanently fixed status quo.
23. Dennis the Menace
Hank Ketcham’s Dennis the Menace turned a child’s energy and a neighborhood’s exasperation into a reliable comic collision. Dennis is not simply naughty; the humor depends on the gap between his innocent intentions and the trouble adults see around him. Its compact domestic setup helped it travel well as a daily gag.
24. Mother Goose and Grimm
Mike Peters’s Mother Goose and Grimm uses cartoon animals and fairy-tale associations as raw material for contemporary absurdity. Its loose, gag-first approach offers a contrast to serialized adventures and strips whose comedy depends on a carefully developed family cast.

25. Shoe
Jeff MacNelly’s Shoe built a comic workplace around a newsroom populated by birds. The setting made room for jokes about journalism, deadlines, and office personalities, while the animal characters kept the satire light on its feet. It belongs on a broad list because it shows how a strip can turn a profession into a sustained comic world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these strips show about the form
Newspapers became a space for visual invention
Hogan’s Alley used action across the page and dialogue within the image; Little Nemo in Slumberland made elaborate page design part of the dream. Later strips such as Nancy showed that invention could also come from restraint: an economical composition can make timing and clarity do the work.
Some strips changed what could continue from day to day
The Gumps and adventure strips like Terry and the Pirates demonstrated the appeal of returning storylines. Gasoline Alley went further by letting characters age, while For Better or For Worse also made change within family life a central part of its approach.
Comedy could be intimate, absurd, or political
Peanuts found humor in vulnerability; The Far Side in surreal reversals; Garfield in the fixed appetites of a memorable character. Pogo and Doonesbury brought political commentary into syndicated comics by different routes, showing that the form can engage public life as readily as domestic routines.

A strip may reach a vast audience, earn critical acclaim, or alter the craft without doing all three to the same degree. Krazy Kat makes that distinction especially clear. Reading a list like this as a map of different achievements is more useful than treating it as a final contest.
