25 Best Dragon Ball Z Characters, Ranked by Story Impact

A subjective ranking of 25 Dragon Ball Z characters, judged by story impact, development, distinctiveness and relationships rather than strength alone.

There is no official ranking of the best Dragon Ball Z characters. This list ranks 25 characters by their narrative importance, development, distinctiveness, relationships and influence on the Z-era story—not by fighting strength alone. It follows the main story shared by the Z anime and its manga source, and excludes characters who appear only in films. The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus poll.

How this ranking weighs the characters

A great fighter is not automatically a great character. The ranking gives weight to what each person changes in the story, how they develop, how memorable their relationships are, and how clearly they stand apart from the rest of the cast. Strength matters when it shapes a conflict, but it is not the scorecard.

The story began as a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984. Toei Animation reported in 2015 that collected and complete editions had passed 230 million copies in worldwide circulation; that is a historical franchise-wide manga figure, not a current total or a Dragon Ball Z-only sales count. 25 best Dragon Ball Z characters, ranked

25. Yajirobe

Yajirobe is an unlikely presence in a story full of fighters who train for world-ending battles. His fear and self-interest make him a comic counterpoint to the heroes, but he also steps in when it matters—most notably by cutting off Vegeta’s tail during the Saiyan conflict. He is memorable precisely because he is not built like a conventional hero.

24. Chiaotzu

Chiaotzu has less room to develop than the main cast, yet his loyalty to Tien gives him a distinct place in the ensemble. His willingness to sacrifice himself against Nappa is a small but stark reminder that courage in this story is not measured by who can win a fight.

23. Videl

Videl brings a grounded, determined energy to the Great Saiyaman portion of the story. She starts as a capable martial artist who wants to uncover Gohan’s secret, then becomes his partner rather than merely a spectator to his life. Her curiosity and nerve make the world outside the central battles feel more lived-in.

22. Puar

Puar’s shapeshifting and gentle loyalty connect the later Z-era cast to the earlier adventure format of Dragon Ball. The character is not a major driver of Z’s central conflicts, but the friendship with Yamcha adds continuity and warmth to a series increasingly dominated by escalating threats.

21. Dende

Dende’s importance grows from a vulnerable Namekian child into a trusted ally whose healing and later role as Earth’s guardian have lasting consequences. His story shows that a character can matter to the fate of the world without being a frontline fighter.

20. Android 18

Android 18 arrives as a dangerous, self-possessed antagonist and gradually settles into a quieter life without losing her sharpness. Her bond with Krillin gives both characters a new direction, while her cool refusal to be intimidated makes her stand out among the Androids.

19. Android 16

Android 16 is built for a purpose he ultimately rejects: harming Goku. His affinity for nature and his bond with Gohan give the Cell Games an emotional center beyond the contest of strength. His fate becomes a decisive catalyst for Gohan, making his brief arc unusually consequential.

18. King Kai

King Kai’s eccentric humor disguises a pivotal role in Goku’s development. His training gives Goku new tools for the Saiyan threat, and his guidance continues to matter as the scale of the conflicts grows. He makes the cosmic side of the story feel playful as well as vast.

17. Master Roshi

Roshi embodies the martial-arts tradition that shaped Goku and Krillin, even as the series moves far beyond the scale of his own fighting. His jokes can be dated, but his role as teacher and his enduring affection for his students keep him tied to the story’s beginnings.

16. Nappa

Nappa is a blunt, intimidating force whose arrival makes the Saiyan threat tangible. He is not a deeply layered antagonist, but his brutal confidence and the devastation of the Earth battle establish the danger that Vegeta represents. His role is effective because the story does not confuse menace with complexity.

15. Raditz

Raditz is the first major shock of Z: Goku’s enemy is also his brother, and the revelation changes the scale of the story from martial-arts adventure to Saiyan inheritance and interplanetary conflict. Though his time in the story is brief, he sets the plot in motion and forces Goku and Piccolo into an uneasy alliance.

14. Goten

Goten’s cheerful resemblance to young Goku gives the series a glimpse of the next generation, but his most distinctive role comes through his partnership with Trunks. Their fusion creates one of the story’s most entertainingly overconfident figures. Goten ranks lower because his own development remains relatively limited.

13. Trunks

Future Trunks makes an immediate impression by arriving from a ruined future with a warning no one can afford to ignore. His connection to Vegeta complicates the prince’s pride with a personal stake, while his timeline gives the Android and Cell conflicts a sense of consequence beyond the present. The younger Trunks later brings a different, more mischievous energy.

12. Krillin

Krillin’s importance comes partly from being an ordinary human among increasingly powerful Saiyans, but never just from being outmatched. He is Goku’s oldest friend, a recurring source of humor, and a participant in choices with serious consequences. His connection with Android 18 also gives him a life beyond serving as the team’s vulnerable companion.

11. Tien

Tien’s progression from rival to ally is one of the series’ clearest examples of a fighter choosing discipline and loyalty over ego. His power becomes less competitive as the story scales up, but his determination—especially when facing threats far beyond his level—preserves his dignity as a character.

10. Ginyu

Captain Ginyu turns the Frieza conflict into something stranger and more theatrical. His body-switching technique makes the fight with Goku a contest of identity as well as skill, and his squad’s eccentricity gives the Namek saga a memorable change of tone. He is a distinctive supporting villain rather than a grand strategist.

9. Dabura

Dabura gives the Buu storyline a demonic presence and serves as a bridge between Babidi’s schemes and the threat that follows. His petrifying spit makes him dangerous in a different way from the usual brawler, and his brief change in the afterlife hints at a more complicated nature than his role initially suggests.

8. Majin Buu

Buu is compelling because the same character can be childlike, catastrophic, or unexpectedly gentle. His changing forms give the final saga a shifting antagonist, while his friendship with Hercule helps redirect the story away from pure destruction. The transformation is not subtle, but it is central to the saga’s emotional and tonal range.

7. Hercule Satan

Hercule is a boastful fraud in the eyes of the audience, but his bluster becomes an unlikely tool for reaching people whom raw strength cannot persuade. His friendship with Buu is one of the story’s most surprising relationships, and his public persona creates a comic contrast with the heroes’ hidden work.

6. Cell

Cell is a carefully constructed threat: an engineered being assembled from the abilities of earlier fighters, with an ego that grows alongside his power. The Cell Games force Gohan into the spotlight and make the villain’s confidence part of the dramatic pressure. Cell’s role is strongest not as a list of abilities, but as the antagonist who brings Gohan’s arc to its defining crisis.

5. Frieza

Frieza is the tyrant whose cruelty makes the Namek conflict feel personal and whose presence drives one of the saga’s most consequential turning points. Toei’s Goku profile identifies the fight with Frieza as the moment Goku awakens as a Super Saiyan. Frieza’s value as a villain lies in the way his domination, arrogance and violence transform the stakes of the story—not simply in how strong he is. Toei Animation’s Goku profile

4. Piccolo

Piccolo begins as Goku’s enemy and becomes one of his most important allies, then takes on the role of Gohan’s stern, formative teacher. His bond with Gohan gives him emotional depth without softening his reserved nature. Toei’s account of Gohan’s story highlights Piccolo’s training and influence during the Saiyan conflict. Dragon Ball Official: Gohan’s story

3. Gohan

Gohan’s defining tension is that he does not want the same life as his father. He is drawn into conflict as a child, trains under Piccolo, travels to Namek, and ultimately becomes central to the Cell Games. Toei describes Goku’s confidence in Gohan and the boy’s friendship with Android 16—relationships that help make his turning point more than a sudden increase in power. Gohan ranks this high for the arc’s emotional payoff and for the way his reluctance distinguishes him from the series’ eager fighters. Dragon Ball Official: Gohan’s story

2. Vegeta

Vegeta’s pride is both his armor and the source of his most important changes. He arrives as a ruthless Saiyan prince, defined by superiority and rivalry, then has to live with defeats, shifting alliances and the bonds he once would have dismissed. His relationship with Goku remains the story’s richest rivalry because it is not only about who can win; it is also about identity, envy and the limits of pride. The official franchise feature follows his confrontation with Goku and describes techniques including the Galick Gun. Dragon Ball Official: Vegeta feature

1. Goku

Goku is the center of Z because his optimism, appetite for challenge and instinct to give opponents a chance shape the story’s conflicts as much as his fighting does. Toei identifies him as a Saiyan sent to Earth as a child, raised there, and the father of Gohan and Goten; its profile also places his Super Saiyan awakening in the battle with Frieza. He tops this ranking not because the strongest fighter must be the best character, but because his outlook sets the series in motion and gives its rivals, allies and successors something to push against. Best character is not the same as strongest fighter

The answer to “Who is the strongest character in Dragon Ball Z?” changes with the saga, forms and point in the story being compared. That is a different question from who is best written or most important. This ranking puts Goku first for his centrality and influence; it places Gohan and Vegeta near the top for their development and relationships, even though raw strength alone would produce a different list.
