If you want a horror movie that keeps springing sudden jolts, these 25 picks offer a mix of high scare counts and films rated highly for jump-scare frequency and intensity. The list is an editorial selection, not a universal ranking: databases count scares differently, and a big total does not guarantee that a movie will feel scarier—or better—to you.
How to read jump-scare counts
A jump scare is more than a loud sound or an unsettling image. Where’s The Scares? defines one as “an intentionally crafted audiovisual moment designed to trigger a sudden startle response.” Its method considers abruptness, sensory contrast and intent, while recognizing that context matters. A slow, uneasy atmosphere may be frightening without qualifying as a jump scare.
The totals below are database counts, not scientific measurements of how often every viewer will jump. Where’s The Jump? supplies most of the counts; Watch Darkly supplies two additional entries, with its own counting method. Their figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable. Where’s The Jump? also has a separate high-scare category for movies rated at least 4 out of 5 for both frequency and intensity—a useful distinction between “many jolts” and “hard-hitting jolts.”
Titles are grouped to make the list easy to browse, not ranked against one another. Descriptions stay spoiler-light and focus on the kind of scare experience to expect.
Movies with the highest reported counts
1. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013)
32 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? The highest total on that site’s overall list. Choose it when sheer reported frequency is the priority; the number is specific to that database, not a universal record.
2. Extraterrestrial (2014)
30 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? A high-count pick for viewers after a steady run of jolts rather than a slow-burn-only approach.
3. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
29 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? One of the overall list’s leaders, suited to viewers who want frequent startle moments in a horror-action setting.
4. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)
29 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? The same reported total as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Its presence among the leaders makes it a natural choice for a supernatural scare night.

27 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? Another high-frequency option in the database list, with supernatural horror at its center.
6. Evil Dead II (1987)
27 counted scares — Where’s The Jump? This count is also reported by Watch Darkly. The film combines horror with exaggerated, kinetic energy, so its jolts come in a very different register from a restrained ghost story.
