Joaquin Phoenix’s strongest films show how much range can fit inside a single career: he can make a role feel physically combustible, quietly vulnerable, or unsettlingly comic. This ranking weighs four things together: the distinctiveness and control of Phoenix’s performance, the film’s writing and direction, what the role reveals about his range, and the work’s lasting critical or institutional recognition. It is a performance-led editorial judgment, not a claim of objective consensus.
That approach differs from a critic-score list. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Joaquin Phoenix guide orders films by Tomatometer; its November 19, 2024 edition placed Her first and C’mon C’mon second. Those figures and rankings describe that page at that time, not a universal verdict. The list below also considers how Phoenix’s work spans supporting parts, leading roles, studio films, and independent cinema, from the physical extremes of The Master to the restrained intimacy of Her.
The 25 best Joaquin Phoenix movies
-
The Master (2012)
Phoenix’s Freddie Quell is the defining example of his physical transformation: a hunched, twitchy, volatile man whose body seems to react before his thoughts can catch up. The performance is fearless without becoming a stunt, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s exacting direction gives it a world as strange and compelling as its central character. The BFI has described Phoenix’s construction of Quell as an extreme physical performance. It is the clearest benchmark for the particular intensity he brings to a role.
-
Her (2013)
In Spike Jonze’s near-future romance, Phoenix plays Theodore, a lonely man who falls in love with an operating system. The performance works through pauses, soft shifts in expression, and an openness that makes the film’s speculative premise emotionally legible. It is almost the opposite of Freddie Quell: inward rather than explosive, but no less carefully made. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first by Tomatometer in its November 19, 2024 guide, with a 95% score on that page.

-
Walk the Line (2005)
Phoenix’s Johnny Cash is not merely an impression built from a voice and a famous stage presence. He conveys the strain beneath the performer, then makes the music feel like part of the character’s emotional life. The role became a major career landmark: the BFI records his Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination for the performance. It also shows Phoenix’s ability to work within a conventional biographical drama without flattening its complicated central figure.
-
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
As Joe, a damaged contract killer sent to rescue a girl, Phoenix gives a largely taciturn performance that communicates through posture, fatigue, and sudden violence. Lynne Ramsay’s elliptical direction refuses easy explanations, and Phoenix meets that approach with a role that feels both frightening and painfully exposed. The Cannes Film Festival awarded him Best Actor for the film in 2017.
-
Joker (2019)
Phoenix turns Arthur Fleck into a character who is simultaneously pitiable, disturbing, and hard to look away from. His performance moves between discomforting comedy and horror, making the film’s larger-than-life descent feel grounded in a painfully isolated person. Joker became one of Phoenix’s most visible roles; A24’s press notes record that he won the 2020 Academy Award, BAFTA, SAG Award, and Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Leading Role for it.
-
Two Lovers (2008)
James Gray’s intimate drama gives Phoenix room to play uncertainty rather than force. As Leonard, a man caught between two possible futures, he makes indecision feel active: every hesitation hints at a deeper fear of choosing badly. The BFI singles out the performance’s nuance and emotional complexity, qualities that make this one of his most rewarding quieter roles.

Inherent Vice (2014)
Phoenix’s Doc Sportello is a private investigator whose hazy, scruffy manner makes him seem permanently one thought behind the plot. His loose comic timing is a different kind of physicality from The Master: the gestures and detours are less explosive, but just as distinctive. Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation is deliberately tangled, and Phoenix supplies an engaging center without pretending the mystery is tidier than it is.

-
Gladiator (2000)
As Commodus, Phoenix makes a supporting role feel like a live wire running through Ridley Scott’s historical epic. He plays the emperor’s insecurity as a source of menace, giving the film a personal antagonist rather than a merely political one. The BFI identifies Gladiator among the films for which Phoenix received Oscar recognition; it remains an important early milestone in his career.
-
C’mon C’mon (2021)
In Mike Mills’s black-and-white drama, Phoenix plays radio journalist Johnny, whose time caring for his young nephew turns into an understated study of listening and responsibility. He tempers his usual intensity, building the role around patience and warmth. Rotten Tomatoes ranked the film second by Tomatometer in its November 19, 2024 guide, with a 94% score on that page; its write-up praised the central chemistry and Mills’s direction.
-
The Immigrant (2013)
Phoenix reunites with James Gray in this period drama, playing Bruno, a complicated man entangled in the life of a Polish immigrant in 1920s New York. The performance balances tenderness with coercion, keeping the character morally unsettled rather than easily categorized. The film’s Cannes competition history and its place in Gray and Phoenix’s recurring collaboration add useful context to a career that often moves between major productions and personal dramas.

To Die For (1995)
Gus Van Sant’s dark satire is a key early Phoenix appearance, made as he returned to using the name Joaquin after early credits as Leaf. He plays Jimmy, a teenager drawn into the orbit of Nicole Kidman’s ambitious television personality. The role is supporting, but it shows the screen presence that would develop into a much more varied career.
-
Signs (2002)
In M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense film, Phoenix plays Merrill, a former baseball player facing an extraordinary crisis alongside his brother’s family. His grounded, often dryly funny presence gives the escalating premise a human counterweight. The BFI identifies Signs as one of Phoenix’s two collaborations with Shyamalan, alongside The Village.

-
The Yards (2000)
Phoenix’s role as Willie Gutierrez in this early James Gray film is part of the foundation of a lasting director-actor partnership. The film’s crime-world pressures give him a supporting role shaped by loyalty and consequence rather than showy transformation. Its place here is as much about the beginning of that collaboration as about the scale of the part itself.
-
We Own the Night (2007)
Another James Gray collaboration, this crime drama casts Phoenix as Bobby Green, a nightclub manager forced to reckon with his family’s law-enforcement ties. He brings a wary charm to a character whose choices keep narrowing. The performance adds a substantial supporting-era entry to Phoenix’s filmography and extends his work with Gray beyond the quieter register of Two Lovers.

The Village (2004)
Phoenix plays Lucius Hunt, a reserved young man in a community organized around fear of the woods beyond its borders. The role asks for stillness and conviction, giving Phoenix a genre setting in which to explore devotion and doubt. It also offers a tonal counterpoint to his biographical dramas and his more explosive character studies.
-
Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018)
In Gus Van Sant’s film based on cartoonist John Callahan’s memoir, Phoenix plays Callahan through addiction, a life-changing accident, and the work of rebuilding. The role asks him to hold pain and irreverence in the same frame, an appealing fit for a film whose subject used dark humor to look directly at difficult experiences.
-
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
Ari Aster’s sprawling, surreal film gives Phoenix the title role: an anxious man whose journey home keeps expanding into new forms of dread. Phoenix commits fully to its shifts in scale and tone, making Beau’s vulnerability the thread through an intentionally unruly performance. Its position here reflects the ambition and distinctiveness of the role, not a claim that its long-term standing is settled.

Napoleon (2023)
Phoenix plays Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott’s large-scale historical film, reuniting with the director of Gladiator. Rather than simply repeat the commanding screen persona of that earlier film, he gives this Napoleon an eccentric, often awkward quality. The performance makes the film an interesting later-career contrast, even when its historical scale draws attention away from the character’s private life.

Quills (2000)
This period drama places Phoenix among a cast exploring the final years of the Marquis de Sade’s confinement. His role is smaller than the title suggests, but the film adds an early period piece to a career that would later include very different historical settings. Its inclusion reflects the range of projects Phoenix took on before his leading-man identity became firmly established.
-
Reservation Road (2007)
Phoenix stars in Terry George’s drama about the devastating aftermath of a hit-and-run collision. The film belongs to the same career period as his work with James Gray, though its central concern is family grief and the damage caused by an attempt to conceal wrongdoing. Phoenix gives its emotional conflict a controlled, serious center.
-
Irrational Man (2015)
In Woody Allen’s drama, Phoenix plays an existentially troubled philosophy professor whose search for purpose takes a dangerous turn. The role lets him combine intellectual self-importance with a more unpredictable edge. It is a distinct entry in his later filmography, situated between his collaborations with Anderson and his increasingly varied independent projects.
-
The Sisters Brothers (2018)
Jacques Audiard’s western casts Phoenix as one half of a pair of hired killers moving through the American frontier. The film gives him a quieter, more companionable counterpoint to the isolated figures in several of his best-known performances. Its shifts between violence and melancholy make it a useful reminder that Phoenix’s intensity can serve a broad ensemble rather than dominate every scene.

Mary Magdalene (2018)
Phoenix plays Jesus in Garth Davis’s religious historical drama, which approaches familiar events through Mary Magdalene’s perspective. The casting produces an unusual tonal effect: as the BFI notes, Phoenix’s performance can carry incongruous comic possibilities even within a solemn setting. That tension makes the film more interesting as a career choice than as a conventional showcase.
-
Eddington (2025)
Ari Aster’s Eddington, listed in competition at Cannes in 2025, brings Phoenix into a contemporary story set in a small New Mexico town. Its recent release makes any assessment of its durability provisional: it has not had the time to accumulate a long record of critical regard. It earns a place here as a current chapter in Phoenix’s continuing willingness to take on highly distinctive projects.
-
Buffalo Soldiers (2001)
In this military satire, Phoenix plays a soldier stationed in Germany near the end of the Cold War. The film is a career-context pick rather than a high-water mark: it shows his early interest in roles with a sly or morally uncertain streak, traits that would later appear in more fully realized forms across his filmography.
How Phoenix’s filmography shows his range
The strongest evidence of Phoenix’s range is not simply the variety of genres he has worked in, but the different means by which he makes characters legible. Freddie Quell’s body in The Master is a source of constant tension; Theodore in Her communicates through restraint; Doc Sportello’s comic looseness in Inherent Vice makes confusion part of the performance. Arthur Fleck in Joker turns that volatility outward, while C’mon C’mon finds Phoenix building a role around attention to another person.

The career also moves between lead performances and supporting parts. Gladiator, The Yards, and We Own the Night show how effectively he can sharpen an ensemble film without owning every scene. Meanwhile, Walk the Line, You Were Never Really Here, and Joker became landmarks through different forms of recognition: awards, festival honors, and sustained attention to distinctive performances. No single ranking system can capture all of those dimensions.
