A Viral Theory About Gen Z, Depression and the Loss of “Third Places”

A viral TikTok argued that Gen Z lacks “third places.” The idea resonates with concerns about community, but the reporting does not prove that their loss causes depression.

Christian Bonnier, a 24-year-old marketing agency owner in Tampa, argues that Gen Z feels depressed because it lacks “third places”: informal places to gather outside home and work. The idea struck a nerve online, but the reporting on his viral TikTok does not establish that losing such spaces causes depression.

What Bonnier’s theory says

“Our generation is so depressed because we don’t have a third place,” Bonnier said in the TikTok quoted by The Times of India. The video had more than 600,000 views when reports covered it in February 2025; that is a historical count, not a current view total.

A third place is an informal communal setting beyond home and work. Examples include cafés, pubs, community centers, parks, and recurring group activities. The term is associated with sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s 1991 book The Great Good Place. As The Times of India reported, Oldenburg wrote: “Life without community has produced, for many, a lifestyle consisting mainly of a home-to-work-and-back-again shuttle.” He also wrote, “Social well-being and psychological health depend upon community.”

Bonnier’s argument is that fewer easy, recurring opportunities to spend time with others can leave people isolated. That is a plausible subject for debate, not a demonstrated explanation for depression.

Why the claim drew disagreement

Comments reported by Indian Defence Review and The Times of India reflect more than one disagreement: whether people socialize differently now, whether informal gathering places are actually disappearing, and whether young adults can afford or access welcoming spaces. The comments are examples of online reaction, not representative polling.

The question is not only whether a venue exists. A café or club may be costly, far away, or unwelcoming; a recurring activity may require time, transport, or membership fees. These access concerns complicate the idea that individuals can simply choose a third place, but the reporting does not measure how common those barriers are.

What the mental-health figures do—and do not—show

A March 2024 Guardian feature reported that one in three UK 18- to 24-year-olds had symptoms indicating a common mental-health problem, such as depression or an anxiety disorder, compared with one in four in 2000. The statistic came from a three-year Resolution Foundation research programme funded by the Health Foundation. It describes reported symptoms, not a diagnosis rate, and it does not test whether access to third places affects mental health.

The Guardian discussed several possible influences and quoted Bobby Duffy, professor and director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London: “For every complex problem, there is a simple answer that is wrong.” The statistic concerns young adults in the UK; Bonnier is a US-based speaker, and the figure cannot by itself establish a cause that applies across countries or generations.

Other explanations remain part of the debate

Less access to informal gathering spaces is one proposed explanation, but the coverage also points toward broader questions about social habits, affordability, remote work and reduced incidental contact. Economic and social pressures may affect people across age groups rather than Gen Z alone. These are competing hypotheses and contextual possibilities, not causal findings established by the cited reporting.

It is also important not to describe an entire generation as depressed. The UK statistic concerns a share of young adults reporting symptoms, while the viral claim uses broad language. Neither says that every young person has a mental-health condition or that a single social change explains distress.

Does being 24 make the claim about brain development?

No such claim is established in the reporting. The headline’s reference to Bonnier’s age identifies the speaker; it does not show that he is making a point about brain maturity. McGill University’s Office for Science and Society explains that brain development continues into the twenties while cautioning against treating 25 as a universal cutoff. Its discussion is useful context, but it does not validate or refute Bonnier’s theory.

What Bonnier suggests people do

In the reported video, Bonnier urged people to seek recurring activities such as a gym, running club, book club, sports league, or other group. These are his suggestions for creating more regular social contact, not treatments shown by the cited sources to treat clinical depression. The coverage does not assess their cost, accessibility, or mental-health outcomes.

For readers interested in the idea itself, Oldenburg’s The Great Good Place is the background book identified in the coverage. It offers a way to think about communal settings; it is not evidence that the viral theory is correct or a substitute for mental-health care.
