This 21-title selection, originally published by Lifehacker and reproduced by List Challenges, is best read as a collection of films that drew prominent challenges in particular countries—not proof that they were prohibited everywhere or remain banned today.
What this list can—and can’t—tell you
The selection includes Cannibal Holocaust, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris, The Last Temptation of Christ, I Spit on Your Grave, The Da Vinci Code, Life of Brian, Brokeback Mountain, Cannibal Ferox, Possession, Lightyear, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, In the Realm of the Senses, A Serbian Film, Nekromantik, Song of the South, Faces of Death, The Interview and The Doom Generation. The source does not present these as an objective ranking, and it warns that its country lists are not exhaustive: bans are not always publicly documented, and a film may remain unavailable simply because no one has sought a new release. The selection emphasizes places where challenges were especially vocal. Read the reproduced list and its caveat.
“Banned” needs a country and a date. A government or classification board may prohibit a film, demand cuts, refuse a rating or later permit it with an adults-only classification. A distributor may also choose not to release a film, and a film may never have been submitted for approval. Those situations are not interchangeable. A historical entry on a list does not establish a film’s legal status now.
Why films have been restricted
Authorities have cited different grounds in different cases, including graphic violence, sexual content, political concerns, religious sensitivities and the perceived effect on a country’s image. A historical catalogue maintained by Dartmouth’s Media Ecology Project illustrates the variety: its examples include violence and rape concerns around A Clockwork Orange in Ireland, sexual content around Last Tango in Paris in Portugal, political grounds for Le Petit Soldat in France, religious concerns around The Last Temptation of Christ in Israel, and national-image concerns around Zoolander in Malaysia. These examples show the range of rationales; they are not a complete explanation of every title in this 21-film selection. Explore Dartmouth’s historical film-censorship catalogue.

Restrictions also reflect systems of prior review. Freemuse’s State of Artistic Freedom 2022 report notes: “National legislation in dozens of countries worldwide requires film approval prior to its release in cinemas or the approval of the script to obtain the licence for shooting.” That report’s section on film censorship in 2021 counted 285 reported cases in 51 countries. It displayed rationale counts of 168 for politics, 66 for indecency, 37 for LGBTI issues, 35 for religion and 32 for women. These are the report’s case and category counts for 2021—not a count of unique films or a current annual total—and the categories should not be assumed to be mutually exclusive. Read Freemuse’s report.
A ban can change: the example of A Clockwork Orange
Dartmouth’s catalogue records that Singapore rejected an M18 submission for A Clockwork Orange in 2006, then lifted the ban; the uncut film screened at the Perspectives Film Festival with an R21 rating on 28 October 2011. The same catalogue says Ireland’s ban was lifted in 2000 and that South Korea’s ban was later lifted. These are historical catalogue records, not a check of current law or classification in those countries. They show why a past ban should not be reported as a present-day prohibition without checking the jurisdiction and date.

How to read claims that a film is banned
- Identify the place and period. A restriction in one country says nothing by itself about availability elsewhere or the film’s status today.
- Check what the decision actually did. A full prohibition differs from required cuts, a refused rating, a later adults-only classification or a distributor’s decision not to release a film.
- Look for a later decision. An appeal, a lifted ban or a subsequent classification may have changed the film’s status.
- Ask what the source establishes. Lists of bans can be incomplete, and historical catalogues document past decisions rather than provide a live status check.
For that reason, “among the world’s most banned movies” is a useful hook for exploring censorship history, but not a precise measure of how many countries currently prohibit each film.
