Harvey Fierstein was announced as the recipient of the 2025 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre on April 24, 2025. He received the honor at the 78th Annual Tony Awards ceremony on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
What award did Harvey Fierstein receive?
The award is the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. It is distinct from the competitive Tony categories for a particular performance or production: under the 2024–25 Tony rules, the Tony Awards Administration Committee may grant it at its discretion to an individual whose creative or management contributions and achievements have had a profound effect on theatre, as determined by the committee. The official winners listing confirms Fierstein as the 2025 recipient.
Why was Fierstein honored?
The Tony Awards announcement described Fierstein as an actor and writer and cited his four Tony wins, alongside his work across plays and musicals. Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, said: “Harvey Fierstein’s contributions to the American theatre, both as an artist and activist, represent an extraordinary legacy.”

Before the ceremony, Fierstein joked to the Associated Press that he thought the Tonys wanted “to give me something else to dust.” In his acceptance remarks, he reflected on the audience’s role in theatre: “There is nothing quite like bathing in the applause of a curtain call, but when I bow, I bow to the audience, with gratitude, knowing that without them I might as well be lip-syncing showtunes in my bedroom mirror.” He dedicated the award “to the people in the dark.”
