Kaushik’s story is “Mrs. Gaonkar’s Girls”; de Sa’s is “Tamarind.” Neither was the Asia regional winner: Bangladesh’s Faria Basher won with “An Eye and a Leg.” Chanel Sutherland of Canada won the overall prize for “Descend.”
Which Indian writers made the Asia shortlist?
The Commonwealth Foundation’s official 2025 shortlist archive lists both writers as representing India:
- Parul Kaushik — “Mrs. Gaonkar’s Girls”
- Tino de Sa — “Tamarind”
The shortlist is a stage in the competition, not the same as winning the Asia regional prize. The archive describes Kaushik’s story as told in the collective voice of young women trafficked into captivity in Delhi who strive for liberation. It does not provide a synopsis for de Sa’s story, so its plot cannot be established from the title alone.
Who won the 2025 prizes?
Faria Basher of Bangladesh won the Asia regional prize for “An Eye and a Leg.” The archive describes it as a darkly humorous and surreal take on the trope of the “expiring” South Asian woman. Chanel Sutherland won the overall prize for “Descend.” The other regional winners were Joshua Lubwama (Africa), Subraj Singh (Caribbean), and Kathleen Ridgwell (Pacific); Sutherland was the Canada and Europe regional winner as well as the overall winner.

How many entries did the prize receive?
The Commonwealth Foundation reported 7,920 entries for the 2025 prize, describing the total as record-breaking. That is the total number of entries received across the competition, not the number shortlisted or a count for Asia alone. The Foundation’s 2024–25 interim report gives the same overall figure and a regional breakdown.
The Foundation says the process moves from a longlist of 200 entries to a shortlist of around 25 stories, five regional winners, and one overall winner. Its archive records 25 shortlisted stories from writers in 18 Commonwealth countries.

What did the judges say about the shortlist?
Dr Vilsoni Hereniko, chair of the 2025 judges and a writer and filmmaker, said: “A great story moves us, causes us to think, and sometimes changes us. This shortlist of relevant, vibrant, and essential reading is made up of the best 25 stories from a pool of almost 8,000 entries. Together, they demonstrate why the short story form must continue to be supported and promoted.” The quotation appears in the Commonwealth Foundation’s shortlist archive.
Where can readers find the shortlisted stories?
Adda Stories’ collection of the 2025 shortlisted stories is an online reading destination. Availability of any individual story may change; the collection does not establish that every story is currently accessible or that a print anthology was issued.
What is the current status of the prize?
The Commonwealth Foundation’s current prize page says the 2027 edition is postponed until January 2027 while the Foundation reviews the prize’s processes, rules, and submission guidelines. This is a later-cycle update, separate from the 2025 results.
