What defined the 2024 Emmys beauty looks?
ELLE framed the carpet as a contrast between clean, fresh-faced makeup and more experimental, moody beauty. Berry, burgundy, oxblood, and plum appeared in some of the bolder looks, while flushed cheeks and nude or muted lips offered a softer alternative. - Quinta Brunson: Allure noted a sleek short style with a swooping front curl, smoky shadow and liner, and pointed nails topped with crystals. Hairstylist Alexander Armand credited Maui Moisture Flexible Hold + Coconut Milk Curl Foam Mousse and an Olivia Garden 1.25-inch curling iron. - Da’Vine Joy Randolph: A wet, piece-y finish showed off her newly red hair, paired with tawny lips. Stylist Tai Simon said, “To achieve this look, I used #Mydentity MyHero Nourishing Crème while wet to add moisture to the hair and set the look,” and described using the leave-in styler to define the texture. - Christine Baranski: Deep plum lips gave her look a rich focal point. ELLE identified G.M. Collin Diamond Cream as skincare preparation and Le Rouge Français Le Rouge Braziline as the lip color. - Ayo Edebiri: Long, voluminous waves were the defining feature. Hairstylist Miles Jeffries credited Maui Moisture Frizz-Free + Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Mist and tape-in extensions; makeup artist Ernesto Casillas used Charlotte Tilbury Lip & Cheek Glow for shine on the skin and lips. - Sofia Vergara: Soft, brushed-out waves balanced her look. Hairstylist Renato Campora said the goal was to complement the silhouette of her red Dolce & Gabbana dress with those waves. - Choose the makeup intensity. For a softer direction, look to Gomez’s beige-pink gloss, Einbinder’s dusty rose, or Watts’s coral lip. For more contrast, Cox’s berry-and-oxblood pairing, Purnell’s plum lip, or Brunson’s smoky eyes offer inspiration.
- Pick a hair silhouette that suits your length and texture. The carpet examples span long, smooth hair; loose brushed-out waves; a short sculpted style; a bob; and a classic bun or updo. A stylist can adapt the shape to your own cut rather than matching a celebrity’s exact length.
- Set the finish before choosing styling products. The references include glossy, smooth hair, soft volume, brushed-out curls, and wet, defined texture. Products named by stylists—such as smoothing creams, mousse, leave-in products, or hairspray—were used for their credited looks, not shown to work identically for every hair type.
- For soft waves, use a curling iron as a technique reference. Allure reported a 1.25-inch iron for Gomez’s flipped ends and an Olivia Garden 1.25-inch iron in Brunson’s styling credits; Glamour reported a 1.5-inch iron for Vergara’s waves. Barrel size alone does not determine the outcome: section size, curl direction, hair length, and how the curls are brushed out also affect the finish.
- Finish with one deliberate detail. A crystal nail accent, silver barrette, defined swooping curl, or strong lip color can provide a focal point without recreating every element of a red-carpet look.
