Two centuries on, it remains a lively entry point to a Scottish novelist whose comic writing examines courtship, class, local custom and the limited choices women faced. Ferrier admired Jane Austen, but “Scottish Jane Austen” is best treated as an introduction—not a definition of her work.
Who was Susan Ferrier?
Susan Edmonstone Ferrier (7 September 1782–5 November 1854) was born in Edinburgh and wrote three novels: Marriage (1818), The Inheritance (1824) and Destiny (1831). Her fiction is known for comic caricature, reflective wit and a close rendering of Scottish manners and dialect. It also scrutinizes the conventions that shaped women’s lives and constrained their agency. The National Library of Scotland’s account of Ferrier and the University of Iowa’s teaching resource place her within nineteenth-century Scottish literature, where satire, social custom and moral concerns meet.
What is Marriage about?
The novel follows two generations of women and begins with Lady Juliana, a high-born young woman whose romantic ideals collide with the expectations imposed on her. Faced with an arranged match to an elderly duke, she elopes with a poor Scottish suitor. Her new life brings her from metropolitan society into the practical realities of Highland life. The Association for Scottish Literary Studies describes the novel as an examination of Regency women’s lives.
Ferrier’s famous opening line announces the gap between talk about love and understanding it: “Love is a passion that has been much talked of, often described, and little understood.” The ASLS edition page reproduces the line and provides historical notes for readers who want context.

Romantic ideals meet daily life
Lady Juliana’s story puts romantic expectation under pressure. Ferrier makes the consequences of choice tangible: a marriage is not simply a romantic resolution, but a change in a woman’s social position and everyday circumstances.
Scottish life is part of the argument
The move from elite metropolitan assumptions to Highland customs gives the satire a specifically Scottish setting. Dialect, eccentric characters and local manners are not decorative touches; they help Ferrier show how class and place shape people’s expectations of one another.

Why is Ferrier called the “Scottish Jane Austen”?
The label is a useful shorthand for readers approaching a witty nineteenth-century novelist interested in character and social convention. There is direct evidence that Ferrier admired Austen: in an 1816 letter to Miss Clavering, she praised Emma for characters “so true to life” and a style “so piquant.” The National Library of Scotland transcribes the letter.
That admiration does not establish that Austen directly influenced Marriage. Ferrier had already drafted the novel by the time she wrote the letter, according to the historical reference entry. The NLS also notes an echo of the opening of Pride and Prejudice in Ferrier’s second novel, The Inheritance (1824). Such connections suggest literary conversation, not that Ferrier merely copied Austen.

The differences matter. Austen’s novels and Ferrier’s each develop their own social worlds; Ferrier’s are rooted in Scottish settings, speech and custom. Her sustained attention to women’s education, class and the consequences of marriage gives her fiction its particular emphasis. The NLS recommends Marriage to readers seeking a Scottish take on Austen, but the novel is also worth reading on its own terms.
Why read Ferrier now?
Marriage offers a comic way into questions that remain legible: how much freedom does a woman have when family and social standing shape her prospects? What happens when romantic ideas meet material reality? And how do assumptions about class and place influence what people consider proper? Ferrier explores these questions through satire and sharply observed social detail rather than through abstract argument.

Her work also complicates a narrow view of nineteenth-century fiction as a series of polite courtship stories. In Ferrier, marriage is a social institution with consequences, and local speech and custom help reveal who holds power and whose choices are restricted. The University of Iowa resource discusses this combination of satire, Christian piety, social convention and women’s agency as part of Ferrier’s literary context.

The first edition was published in three volumes in Edinburgh by William Blackwood in 1818. For a modern reading edition with editorial context, ASLS lists a 560-page paperback edited by Dorothy McMillan, published in 2020 (ISBN 978-1-906841-35-5).

McMillan’s edition uses the 1819 second edition as its base and takes account of Ferrier’s early revisions. According to ASLS, it avoids changes made for the 1841 edition to suit Victorian tastes and moralities, and includes extensive historical notes and appendices. Those features make it a strong choice for readers interested in the novel’s period language and social world. The ASLS listing identifies the edition; availability may vary by retailer.
