20,000 Species of Bees is a 2023 Spanish drama written and directed by Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren. Set over a summer in the Basque Country, it follows an eight-year-old child and her mother as they navigate identity, family expectations and the possibility of understanding one another differently. The film uses the family’s beekeeping surroundings to connect its rural setting with an intergenerational portrait of women.
What is 20,000 Species of Bees about?
During a summer in the Basque Country, an eight-year-old child struggles with the ways other people address her. Time with her grand-aunt among the beehives becomes a turning point for the child and her mother, Ane. The story also follows the women in the family as they reckon with their own lives and desires.
Film Movement’s synopsis identifies the child as Coco, also called Aitor, and describes her wish to be treated as a girl. The Spanish Ministry of Culture catalog and production-company synopsis describe the child as Lucía. These names reflect different source descriptions; the film centers on her identity and on the family’s changing understanding of her.
What themes does the film explore?
Urresola describes the film as a story about body, gender and identity told from Lucía’s and Ane’s perspectives. She also frames it as an intergenerational family portrait about acceptance, tradition and change, and the need to be loved as one is. The film therefore does not reduce its characters to a single issue: the child’s experience sits alongside the mother’s and other women’s negotiations with family and self-understanding.

Bees, family and the hive
Urresola connects the hive’s female world with the film’s mostly female family, whose members belong to different generations. She also links bee imagery with Lucía’s fear and the family’s gradual effort to see her as she is. These are the director’s interpretations of the film’s imagery, rather than a universal meaning assigned to bees.
Language and place
The film moves among Basque, Spanish and French in a border setting. Urresola has said that Basque’s lack of grammatical gender marking is significant to Lucía’s story. The languages and location are part of the film’s particular world, not merely background detail.
