There is no objective way to rank actors as “not very attractive,” and the available evidence does not support a responsible list of 20. It does support a closer look at Steve Buscemi and Danny Trejo: performers with distinctive screen personas and substantial careers, whose success should not be reduced to appearance.
Why a list of 20 would overstate what is known
Attractiveness is a subjective judgment shaped by individual taste and culture, not a verifiable category. The sources available here do not establish a defensible set of 20 actors, nor do they show that unconventional appearance caused anyone’s success. Rather than turn opinion into a ranking or fill gaps with unsourced names, this article focuses on two careers supported by identifiable sources.
Steve Buscemi: character work and an unexpected lead
The Television Academy describes Steve Buscemi as a prolific character actor and director. Its profile lists work in films including Fargo, Ghost World, Armageddon and Con Air, as well as television roles in The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. The profile also recounts that HBO executives were surprised when Buscemi was cast as the lead in Boardwalk Empire. That is evidence of a casting choice that challenged expectations; it does not establish that his appearance caused either the surprise or his success. Television Academy profile.
The Independent framed Buscemi as an “unlikely hero” and described his appearance in subjective terms. That language belongs to the publication’s profile, not to an objective measure of attractiveness. The Independent profile.

Danny Trejo: a prolific career beyond acting
Danny Trejo’s official biography describes a career spanning films, television and voice acting, alongside work in production and restaurant ventures. It characterizes his path to success as atypical, but does not claim that his appearance explains his career. Trejo’s official biography.
The biography also identifies Trejo’s Tacos: Recipes and Stories from LA, released in April 2020, as one example of his work beyond screen roles. That broader body of work is a more concrete way to understand his public career than an appearance-based label. Trejo’s official biography.

What these careers do—and do not—show
Buscemi’s casting in a major leading role and Trejo’s work across several entertainment fields illustrate careers that do not fit neatly into a conventional leading-man template. They do not prove a general rule about how appearance affects casting, and the sources cited here provide no verified statistic about attractiveness and acting success. The clearest conclusion is narrower: both actors have substantial careers, while judgments about their looks remain opinions rather than facts.
