Ebenezer Scrooge takes the top spot: few Christmas characters have been reimagined so often or become so closely associated with the season. This is an editorial ranking, not a measured consensus. It weighs cultural reach and longevity, visual recognizability, memorable scenes or lines, emotional impact, repeat holiday viewing, and influence beyond the original title.
The list includes theatrical films and classic Christmas television specials, including animation and stop-motion. A character qualifies when Christmas is central to the story or to the way audiences revisit it; that admits Jack Skellington, whose story crosses Halloween and Christmas, but not every film that merely takes place during the holidays. Other rankings use different rules: for example, a 2021 ShinyShiny list included John McClane, while iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 ranking included four television specials. Those differences are why “iconic” has no single definitive order.
20. Frosty the Snowman
Frosty is instantly legible: a snowman brought to life, with a top hat that makes the transformation possible. The 1969 television special gives him a simple, memorable seasonal story, and his name remains familiar even to viewers who have not watched it recently. He ranks lower because his identity is strongly tied to that one special rather than a broad film franchise.
19. Cindy Lou Who
In How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Cindy Lou Who’s kindness gives the Grinch a human connection before his change of heart. She is less visually or verbally dominant than the title character, but the child’s perspective helps make the story work across versions.

18. Cousin Eddie
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation gives the Griswolds’ Christmas chaos a comic accelerant in Cousin Eddie. His improvised confidence and unmistakable look made him a memorable supporting character, though his place in the seasonal canon is narrower than that of the film’s central family.
17. Sally
Sally’s compassion and clear-eyed understanding of Jack help ground The Nightmare Before Christmas as its story moves between Halloween Town and Christmas Town. Her place here recognizes a character with a strong following and a distinctive visual identity, while keeping the ranking focused on characters whose stories are more exclusively Christmas-centered.
16. Harry and Marv
The burglars in Home Alone are memorable as a pair: their escalating attempts to get into the McCallister house turn the film’s holiday setting into a comic battle of wits. They are crucial to the movie’s enduring set pieces, but the story’s emotional and cultural center is Kevin.
15. Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street
Kris Kringle’s calm insistence that he is Santa Claus gives Miracle on 34th Street its central question: what does it mean to believe? The character’s cultural staying power comes less from comic spectacle than from a story that makes belief, kindness, and public skepticism part of the Christmas ritual.

14. The Snow Miser and Heat Miser
The rival brothers from the television special The Year Without a Santa Claus make weather into a musical face-off. Their contrasting designs and songs give them a distinct identity within the Rankin/Bass holiday-special tradition, even though they are supporting characters rather than the story’s main figures.
13. Hermey
Hermey, the elf who would rather be a dentist, is one of the most memorable characters in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. His refusal to fit the role chosen for him gives the special a thread about belonging that sits alongside Rudolph’s own story.
12. Jack Skellington
Jack’s discovery of Christmas gives The Nightmare Before Christmas its unusual crossover appeal: he approaches the holiday with wonder, but misunderstands what makes it work. His skeletal silhouette and striped suit are recognizable well beyond the film. Disney’s official The Nightmare Before Christmas page presents Jack alongside other characters and a merchandise catalog; that catalog shows character-related products, not current stock at any particular retailer.
11. Frosty’s foil, Professor Hinkle
Professor Hinkle supplies the threat in Frosty the Snowman, pursuing the hat that brought Frosty to life. His role is memorable within the special, but his cultural reach is much smaller than Frosty’s. This ranking favors characters whose recognition carries beyond their original story, so he falls outside the top ten.

10. Santa Claus in Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town
The Rankin/Bass special gives Santa Claus a backstory, following Kris Kringle from an abandoned baby to the gift-giver audiences know. Its bright stop-motion design and recurring seasonal broadcasts have helped make this version of Santa a familiar television character.
9. Rudolph
Rudolph’s glowing red nose is one of the clearest pieces of Christmas-character iconography: it marks him as different, then becomes the quality that helps save the journey. The 1964 special’s stop-motion look and outsider-to-hero arc have kept him visible across generations. Universal Pictures At Home lists The Complete Rankin/Bass Christmas Collection on Blu-ray and DVD, an 18-special set that includes Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.
8. Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown’s uncertainty about the commercial side of Christmas gives A Charlie Brown Christmas its emotional center. His small, struggling tree has become a recognizable image, and the special’s appeal comes from letting a familiar holiday spectacle feel lonely before it becomes communal again.
7. Clark Griswold
Clark’s determination to create the perfect family Christmas—and his inability to keep the plan under control—anchors National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The character’s appeal rests on a recognizable collision between idealized holiday expectations and domestic chaos. A Comcast survey of more than 2,500 consumers in 2009 found that 24% identified most with Clark and the Griswolds during the holidays. That is historical audience-preference data, not a current measure of popularity.

6. Ralphie Parker
Ralphie’s campaign for a Red Ryder BB gun turns childhood anticipation into the engine of A Christmas Story. His narration, family life, and the film’s comic set pieces have made him a durable holiday protagonist. In a 2009 Comcast survey of more than 2,500 consumers, 38% said they identified most with Ralphie and the Parkers during the holidays; the same survey found 46% chose “You’ll shoot your eye out!” as their favorite holiday-movie line and 31% picked Flick’s tongue-on-the-pole scene as their favorite holiday-movie moment. These figures describe that survey’s respondents at that time, not present-day consensus.
5. Buddy
Buddy’s wholehearted belief in Christmas, even when surrounded by people who do not share it, powers Elf. His bright costume and literal-minded enthusiasm make him easy to recognize, while the story gives that exuberance an emotional counterweight in his search for family. Buddy also appears in the top five of iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 ranking, one example of how lists with different methods can still converge on familiar names.
4. Kevin McCallister
Kevin’s resourcefulness turns being left home alone into the central comic premise of Home Alone. The character is strongly associated with a string of elaborate defenses, but the film also gives his holiday story a family and reconciliation thread. Kevin appears in the top five of iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 ranking and among the leading characters in ShinyShiny’s 2021 list, though neither list establishes a universal placement.

The Grinch’s transformation from Christmas-hating recluse to participant in the Whos’ celebration makes him one of the season’s most adaptable characters. His green silhouette, grumpy manner, and change of heart survive retellings in animation, television, and live action. He recurs near the top of published rankings, including iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 list.

2. George Bailey
George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life is not a gift-giving mascot; he is a character whose Christmas Eve crisis reframes the value of an ordinary life. The film’s annual holiday viewing and its emotional resolution have made George a lasting symbol of community, friendship, and second chances. iFilmThings placed him second in its September 25, 2026 ranking, illustrating how a list that includes television specials can still give a classic theatrical-film character a high position.
1. Ebenezer Scrooge
Scrooge tops the ranking because his story has proved unusually portable. Charles Dickens’s Christmas transformation has been retold across screen versions and formats, and the character’s name itself has become shorthand for a miser who can change. His movement from isolation to generosity gives the figure a clear visual, moral, and emotional arc that remains legible across generations. Scrooge also leads iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 ranking and appears near the top of ShinyShiny’s 2021 list; those are supporting examples of his staying power, not proof of a definitive order.
Why Christmas-character rankings differ
There is no standardized test for “iconic.” DocumentaryTube describes its own approach in terms of cultural impact, longevity, and iconography. iFilmThings’ September 25, 2026 ranking also invokes staying power, quoting, costumes, annual rewatches, and imitation. Those are useful criteria, but they weight different things: a television-special character may benefit from repeated seasonal broadcasts, while a theatrical-film character may have a broader dramatic arc or a more recognizable performance.
Scope changes the list as much as placement. Counting television specials brings characters such as Rudolph, Frosty, and Charlie Brown into consideration. Including Christmas-adjacent stories can bring in Jack Skellington; treating any movie set at Christmas as eligible can admit John McClane from Die Hard, as ShinyShiny’s 2021 list did. This ranking puts Christmas at the heart of a character’s story or seasonal identity rather than using setting alone.
Some characters also come as ensembles. Comcast’s 2009 survey asked about holiday identification with families, reporting Ralphie and the Parkers ahead of Clark and the Griswolds among respondents. That kind of poll adds historical context, but it measures what those survey participants said in 2009—not a current, cross-character ranking. The order above remains an editorial judgment based on the stated criteria.
Where to revisit the television-special characters
For readers revisiting the Rankin/Bass characters, Universal Pictures At Home lists The Complete Rankin/Bass Christmas Collection in Blu-ray and DVD formats. It contains 18 specials, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman; it is a collection of Rankin/Bass specials, not a comprehensive set of every Christmas character on this list.
