A robe you already own can become a ghost, witch, wizard, Jedi, judge, monarch, or graduate. These 20 ideas rely on simple styling cues and optional accessories.

A robe you already own can become a ghost, witch, wizard, monarch, Jedi, or several other recognizable Halloween looks with just a few clothing or prop cues. Scholastic lists a robe as a starting point for a ghost, witch, wizard, king, or queen; the other ideas below are practical styling combinations, not a source-verified list of finished costumes. Start with what is in your closet, then add only the details that make your chosen character clear.

Choose a robe and a costume direction

Match the robe’s color and shape to the look you want, then build around items you already have. A bathrobe is comfortable and casual; a formal robe or graduation gown can read as ceremonial clothing. You do not need a new robe for any of these ideas.

Robe you have Easy directions Useful details
White or pale Ghost, moonlit spirit Dark clothing underneath, a simple face treatment, or a pale scarf
Black or another dark color Witch, wizard, grim reaper, Sith-inspired figure Hat, wand, belt, or a dark hood
Brown Jedi-inspired traveler Tan pants and a cream shirt or tunic
Formal robe or graduation gown Judge, monarch, graduate, wizard Collar, sash, paper certificate, or a simple prop

The accessory suggestions in this table are styling ideas, not requirements. Scholastic’s basic-piece guidance is to adapt simple clothing to express the costume idea: Scholastic’s easy-to-make costume guide identifies a robe for ghost, witch, wizard, king, and queen costumes.

20 robe costume ideas

White or pale robes

  1. Classic ghost. Wear a white robe over pale clothes and let the loose shape do most of the work. Keep your face visible and use simple pale makeup or a white scarf if you want a stronger ghostly cue.
  2. Haunted-house spirit. Pair a pale robe with a dark belt or sash and a deliberately rumpled look. This is a styling variation on the ghost rather than a separate source-listed costume.
  3. Moonlit apparition. Add a silver-colored scarf or any light-catching accessory you already own. Skip it if you want the simplest possible outfit.
  4. Ghostly monarch. Wear the robe with a paper crown or a crown-shaped headband. The crown gives the ghost look a royal twist without changing the robe.

Dark robes

  1. Witch. A dark robe is the base; a pointed hat makes the character immediately legible if one is available. A broom is optional.
  2. Wizard. Add a wand, or carry a straight stick as an improvised prop. StarWars.com’s costume ideas and Scholastic’s basic-piece list both include wizard looks as robe options; the props here are optional ways to signal the role.
  3. Grim reaper. Use a dark robe and pull up its hood if it has one. A dark scarf can stand in for a hood; avoid carrying a sharp prop.
  4. Shadow sorcerer. Tie a belt or sash over the robe and keep the rest of the outfit dark. The belt changes the silhouette and helps distinguish this styling from a plain wizard.
  5. Night-time monarch. Add a paper crown or a scarf worn like a sash. The contrast between formal cue and dark robe creates a simple royal costume.
  6. Sith-inspired space villain. A black or dark robe and a belt suggest a dramatic space-fantasy character. A toy lightsaber is an optional prop; this is an editorial variation, not a costume recipe specifically established by the cited sources.
  7. Hooded storyteller. Wear the robe closed, pull up its hood if possible, and carry a book you already own. The book is a cue, not a required accessory.

Brown robes

  1. Jedi-inspired traveler. StarWars.com’s bathrobe Jedi combination is a brown bathrobe, tan pants, and a cream-colored shirt or tunic; boots and a lightsaber are optional. Its article calls the bathrobe version a quick solution: StarWars.com’s last-minute costume ideas.
  2. Jedi in everyday clothes. Use the same brown robe with tan or other neutral pants and a light shirt you already own. The robe and layered clothing establish the silhouette even without boots or a toy lightsaber.
  3. Traveler with a belt. Add a belt or sash over the brown robe and carry a small bag if one is on hand. This makes the look more like a practical wandering character than a formal Jedi.
  4. Luke-inspired Jedi. If you already have Jedi clothing or a robe from an earlier costume, reuse it rather than assembling a new outfit. StarWars.com specifically suggests reusing an existing Jedi robe for a Luke Skywalker costume in its DIY costume article.

Formal robes and graduation gowns

  1. Judge. Wear a formal robe or graduation gown over ordinary clothes and add a paper collar or carry a book as a simple visual cue. Thomas Edison State University includes a judicial costume among its ideas for adapting cap-and-gown items: its cap-and-gown costume suggestions.
  2. Graduate. Use a graduation gown as the costume itself, with a cap if you have one. A rolled sheet of paper tied with string can stand in for a diploma.
  3. King. Wear a robe with a paper crown or a scarf across one shoulder like a sash. Scholastic lists king among its robe-based costume categories.
  4. Queen. Use the same robe base with a crown, headband, or sash. Scholastic also names queen as a robe costume option; the accessory is a simple styling cue.
  5. Royal wizard. Combine a formal robe with a crown or sash and a wand. This blends two familiar robe costume cues rather than requiring a specialized outfit.

Make the costume work with what you own

  • Check the closet first. Use a bathrobe, dressing gown, graduation gown, or other robe-like garment already available; borrow one rather than buying a costume robe if that is practical.
  • Choose one unmistakable cue. A crown, wand, belt, or lightsaber can communicate the idea quickly. Add more only if they are already on hand or genuinely improve the outfit.
  • Keep movement and visibility in mind. Make sure the robe does not trail underfoot, the sleeves do not block your hands, and any hood leaves your vision clear.
  • Use safe props. Choose a toy or soft prop rather than a real weapon, and avoid pointed or rigid objects in crowded settings.

Thomas Edison State University’s cap-and-gown suggestions include Jedi, judicial, and wizard-adjacent costumes, making graduation regalia a useful alternative when you do not have a bathrobe: Thomas Edison State University’s costume ideas.

Do you need to make or alter the robe?

No. These ideas are designed around styling an existing garment. If you are making a fabric robe or altering one, eHow describes fabric glue or fusible hem tape as no-sew ways to join robe sides and sleeve bottoms: eHow’s no-sew robe instructions. Those construction supplies are for building or changing a robe, not a prerequisite for dressing up in one. A robe sewing pattern is another route if you specifically want to make the garment, but it is unnecessary for the reuse approach.
