The 1984 The Karate Kid grew from a news report and screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen’s own experience with bullying, then came together through unexpected casting, careful rehearsal, Los Angeles locations and practical on-set improvisation. Here are 20 production details, with cataloged facts distinguished from the later memories of the people who made the film.

How the story and cast came together

1. A news report supplied the premise

Producer Jerry Weintraub was drawn to a television news report about a boy who learned karate to stand up to bullies. What caught Weintraub’s attention was the boy’s reported conclusion that, once he had mastered karate, he no longer needed to fight. The American Film Institute (AFI) records this as the film’s starting point. AFI Catalog entry for The Karate Kid.

2. Kamen brought personal experience to the script

Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen had studied with an Okinawan karate master. In Sports Illustrated’s 2018 oral history, he recalled taking up martial arts after bullies attacked him at the 1964 World’s Fair. “My life informed it,” he said. AFI records that Kamen completed his first draft in September 1982. Sports Illustrated oral history, May 1, 2018.

3. Daniel was originally Danny Weber

The Sports Illustrated oral history reports that the lead character was first called Danny Weber. His surname changed to LaRusso after Ralph Macchio entered the casting process.

4. Macchio came in through The Outsiders

Sports Illustrated reports that casting director Bonnie Timmermann remembered Macchio’s work in The Outsiders and brought him in. Kamen recalled that the young actor was not yet coordinated in karate, which suited the character. “That’s perfect. We have a kid that knows nothing,” Kamen said.

5. A 21-year-old played a high-school student

Macchio was 21 while playing Daniel, who is a teenager in the story. In the oral history, he joked that “The Macchio family curve means that you take off six years [from your age] and that’s how old you look.”

6. Pat Morita was not Weintraub’s first choice for Miyagi

AFI says Weintraub initially chose Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune for Mr. Miyagi, but Mifune did not speak English. The film’s eventual casting of Morita followed a reading that changed the producer’s mind.

7. Avildsen’s support helped Morita win the role

In a December 2025 Library of Congress interview, Macchio recalled that Weintraub was initially skeptical of “the Happy Days guy” playing Miyagi. According to Macchio, director John G. Avildsen brought Weintraub a tape of Morita’s reading. Macchio remembered Weintraub later telling Morita: “you know, I almost made the biggest mistake of my career. Congratulations, you’re our Miyagi!” This is Macchio’s retrospective account of the casting decision. Library of Congress interview with Ralph Macchio, December 2025.

8. Several familiar names were considered for roles

Sports Illustrated reports that casting sheets and recollections connected actors including Emilio Estevez, Nicolas Cage, Charlie Sheen, Crispin Glover, Helen Hunt, Demi Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker with roles considered during casting. The oral history also notes that Chad McQueen, Frankie Avalon Jr. and John Travolta’s nephew were among supporting performers with famous family connections; that detail applies to some performers, not the cast as a whole.

How the actors prepared and the action was filmed

9. Rehearsals were staged and videotaped

Cast and crew told Sports Illustrated that Avildsen, a former film editor, rehearsed scenes with marked-out furniture and props and videotaped the work. The process let actors and director shape scenes before the camera setup of the finished film.

10. The Cobra Kai cast was kept apart from Macchio

Several Cobra Kai actors recalled that Avildsen kept their group socially separate from Macchio. The oral-history contributors said the separation helped the performers sustain the antagonism between the two groups on screen.

11. Martial-arts preparation was short and intensive

The Sports Illustrated oral history describes training with choreographer Pat Johnson, including recollections of sessions five days a week for four hours a day in the month before filming, with training continuing during production. Another participant described the preparation as six or seven weeks, so the accounts do not establish one identical schedule for every cast member.

12. Macchio said he performed most of his own stunts

In his 2025 Library of Congress interview, Macchio said, “I had about five weeks of training before we were on camera.” He recalled performing most stunts himself, with a bicycle fall down a hill and flips among the exceptions.

13. Daniel’s karate was designed to look defensive

Kamen told Sports Illustrated that Macchio and Morita trained separately and that Daniel’s technique was deliberately built around blocks and deflections rather than advanced kicks. That was Kamen’s explanation of the character’s intended skill level, not an independent technical assessment of the choreography.

14. The shoot’s start date depends on which account you mean

AFI records 45 days of principal photography beginning October 24, 1983, in Los Angeles, mostly in the San Fernando Valley. Macchio recalled that filming began October 31 at Leo Carrillo beach for the motorcycle beach scene. These dates come from different accounts and do not align exactly; the catalog date describes the principal-photography period, while Macchio’s is a later recollection of the beach shoot.

15. A late-night fight required stunt performers after an injury

In the Sports Illustrated oral history, Macchio recalled being kicked in the jaw during a late-night fight sequence, after which stunt doubles finished the scene. The oral history also identifies Fumio Demura as Morita’s double in the fight where Miyagi takes on the Cobras.

Locations and on-set improvisations

17. The film used real places across the Los Angeles area

AFI’s location record places Daniel’s apartment building at Saticoy Street and Tampa Avenue in Reseda, the high-school scenes at Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School in Woodland Hills, and Miyagi’s house in Canoga Park. Other listed locations include North Hollywood and Encino, Chatsworth Nature Preserve, the Matadome gym at California State University, Northridge, Golf N’ Stuff in Norwalk and Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu. Sports Illustrated identifies the Cobra Kai dojo as being in North Hollywood and recalls that the apartment pool was drained and made green for filming.

18. The fly was made from thread and sweater fuzz

The fly-catching scene took several failed approaches, according to the oral history. A fly wrangler tried chilling flies in a refrigerator, but they sped up as they warmed; a frame-and-wire prop also failed. Producer R.J. Louis recalled using a six-foot pole, thin black thread and fuzz from a script supervisor’s sweater to create a tiny moving imitation of a fly.

19. A slow training dummy became a scene with Morita

Sports Illustrated recounts that a planned hydraulic training dummy, called Mr. Hashimoto, moved too slowly and looked corny. The scene instead used Morita in a catcher’s mask and vest while Macchio practiced on him. The oral history adds that the same prop still did not work when it appeared in the third film.

20. The Halloween costumes had their own practical challenges

For the Halloween party, Daniel wears a shower costume while the Cobras wear skeleton outfits. Macchio remembered that the shower outfit was heavy; crew member William Matthews told Sports Illustrated that he designed the skeleton costumes.

What the records say about the production and its success

AFI identifies the 1984 Columbia Pictures film as a 126-minute drama directed by John G. Avildsen, written by Robert Mark Kamen and produced by Jerry Weintraub. It records the theatrical release as June 22, 1984.

Budget reports changed during production: Variety reported an initial $7.5 million budget on October 19, 1983, while Daily Variety reported an $8 million completion cost on December 27, 1983, as summarized by AFI. AFI lists a $91 million domestic gross; Sports Illustrated rounds the domestic figure to $90 million. These are source-specific historical figures, not inflation-adjusted amounts. AFI also records one Academy Award nomination, for Morita in the supporting actor category.

One unusual end-credit detail: the film acknowledges that the title The Karate Kid was used with DC Comics, Inc.’s consent. The credit itself does not establish any further explanation for the arrangement.
