Spoilers begin before the first entry. There is no official ranking of the best Berserk panels, so this is a subjective selection of moments that show how Kentaro Miura used scale, framing, and visual contrast to make the series’ fantasy-horror feel intimate as well as immense. The choices span the Black Swordsman, Golden Age, Conviction, and later arcs; they are not a claim of consensus or a substitute for checking the licensed pages.

Miura is credited as both writer and artist in Dark Horse’s English listing, which describes Berserk as mature-reader fantasy horror and presents the manga in its original right-to-left reading format. The panels below are described in original language; no manga art or substantial dialogue is reproduced.

20 best Berserk manga panels (spoilers)

1. Guts’ first appearance as the Black Swordsman

The enormous sword announces Guts before the scene can make him feel familiar. Against the threat surrounding him, his lone figure is both imposing and oddly exposed: the weapon gives him power, but the composition makes clear how much danger he faces by himself.

2. Guts’ first major fight with an Apostle

The impact comes from the clash of scales. Guts is a human body confronting a creature whose shape seems to violate ordinary anatomy; the contrast turns a fight into a question of how long human strength can matter against something so monstrous.

3. Godo’s forge and the Dragonslayer

Beside Godo’s forge, the Dragonslayer reads less like a heroic accessory than a slab of iron with a life of its own. Its mass gives physical form to the cost of Guts’ survival: this is a tool built for a world where ordinary proportions and ordinary solutions no longer suffice.

4. Guts leaves the Band of the Hawk

The departure is a visual turning point because separation becomes visible. The space between Guts and the people he is leaving carries the force of a choice that neither his strength nor Griffith’s authority can undo.

5. Griffith after the rescue

The contrast between Griffith’s former command and his broken body is devastating. The figure who once seemed to direct every gaze is now physically diminished, making the reversal legible before anyone explains what it means for him or the Hawks.

6. The Eclipse begins

The Eclipse abruptly changes the visual rules. The familiar pageantry of a historical-fantasy world gives way to a vast supernatural event, and the shift makes the Hawks’ previous battles feel small beside what has arrived.

Rank #2

7. The Band of the Hawk faces the horror

Crowding and scale do the work here: the Hawks are packed into a world that has stopped offering safe distance. The group’s old strength depended on trust and formation; the image makes both feel fragile.

8. Guts struggles to reach Casca

The emotional center is the impossible distance between Guts and Casca. The panel turns movement into anguish: he can see what matters, but physical effort cannot make the gap disappear quickly enough.

9. Guts escapes the Eclipse

Escape is not framed as a clean victory. Survival comes through brutal compromise, and the image leaves the viewer with the price of getting out rather than the relief of a conventional rescue.

10. The Brand of Sacrifice

The Brand is small compared with the horrors around it, which is precisely why it works as a recurring image. A mark on the body condenses threat and memory into something portable: the danger can persist even when the scene changes.

11. Guts in the Black Swordsman period

Scarred, armored, and armed, Guts looks built to endure violence. Yet the outward defenses intensify rather than solve the sense of isolation around him; the body is protected for combat, not made safe from loss.

12. The Tower of Conviction

The Tower’s architecture makes religious spectacle feel like an instrument of control. Its imposing structure and the people gathered around it turn belief into something public, watchful, and frightening.

13. The eclipse-like manifestation in Conviction

A familiar cosmic shape returns with a changed meaning. Its resemblance to earlier horror is not repetition for its own sake: it makes the past feel active again, while the surrounding events give the image a distinct new context.

14. Farnese encounters the supernatural

Farnese’s confidence is most revealing when the framing no longer supports it. As the supernatural intrudes, expression and posture expose the distance between the certainty she performs and the fear she cannot keep contained.

15. The sea god and deep-sea horror

The deep-sea creature imagery expands Berserk’s horror beyond battlefields. The change of environment unsettles the reader’s sense of scale and footing: danger is no longer only something charging across open ground.

16. Guts puts on the Berserker Armor

The armor makes a trade visible. It grants a terrifying new capacity for violence, but the body inside it remains vulnerable to what that power demands. The visual force depends on seeing both the weapon and the danger to its wearer.

17. Schierke enters Guts’ inner world

The contrast between Guts’ external violence and the image of the beast within gives his struggle an interior landscape. Schierke’s presence makes that landscape something another person can approach, without making it harmless.

18. Guts and Casca reunite after her recovery

This is a moment best remembered for hesitation, not spectacle. After so much violence, the difficulty of meeting one another again becomes its own emotional event; intimacy needs time and space rather than a triumphant pose.

19. Griffith returns to the human world

The controlled, almost serene quality of the imagery stands against the violence of transformation. That composure is unsettling: the scene’s calm surface does not erase the cost of what has happened beneath it.

20. A late-series quiet moment

A quiet image of Guts, Casca, or the Moonlight Boy can hold the tension that runs through the series: intimacy is precious precisely because danger has never gone away. A pause in the action does not mean the characters have escaped its consequences.

How to find these images in the English editions

The descriptions identify scenes, not verified chapter or page numbers. Berserk’s regular English paperbacks and oversized Deluxe hardcovers gather the story differently, so use the scene and arc as your guide rather than assuming one page reference works across formats. The regular-volume listing identifies the English edition and its right-to-left format.

For readers who want the art at a larger size, Dark Horse Direct describes the Deluxe Hardcover line as 7 × 10 inches, collecting three regular volumes per book. Penguin Random House’s listing for Deluxe Volume 1 specifies a 696-page hardcover collecting volumes 1–3, published March 26, 2019 by Dark Horse Manga. That first book covers only an opening portion of the series, not the scenes across this list. Regular paperbacks are more portable; the larger hardcovers give the artwork more page area, while the cost and availability of either format depend on current listings.

Dark Horse Direct’s listing for the final Deluxe volume says it collects volumes 40 and 41 plus the Official Guidebook; availability can change, and the listing was marked sold out when accessed. The guidebook is a companion, not a replacement for the manga: its coverage is characters, creatures, settings, and stories from the first 38 volumes, with author notes and an eight-page color section, according to Dark Horse’s guidebook listing. Dark Horse lists regular Volume 41 as released November 16, 2022 and credits Miura as writer and artist on its Volume 41 page.
