Here are 20 documented details that clarify how his work developed, what his different names mean, and what is known about his recent projects.
Names and creative identities
1. Donald Glover and Childish Gambino are the same artist

2. He has also performed as mcDJ
Childish Gambino is not the only performance name in his career. The Television Academy records that Glover has also performed as DJ mcDJ. These names identify different artistic contexts, not separate people. Television Academy

From television writer to performer
5. He joined the writing staff of 30 Rock before starring in Community
The sequence matters: Glover worked behind the scenes as a television writer before many viewers knew him as Troy Barnes on Community. The Television Academy says he was hired by 30 Rock at age 23. Television Academy
6. His first major television role was not his first television job
Glover’s career is sometimes summarized through his on-screen characters, but the 30 Rock writing credit predates his turn as Troy. The distinction helps explain why his later move into creating and directing television was not simply a departure from acting; writing was already part of his professional foundation. Childish Gambino, endings, and the 2024 album
16. Glover was discussing an ending for the moniker as early as 2018
After a Grammy win in 2018, Glover was asked about leaving the Childish Gambino name. He said, “I stand by that,” then explained, “I mean, I’m really appreciative of this and I’m still making another project right now, but I like endings and I think they’re important to progress.” That statement documents how he described the idea at that moment; it does not, by itself, specify what he would do under other names in the future. Recording Academy
17. Bando Stone and the New World arrived in July 2024
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the album was released on July 19, 2024, and described it as the final Childish Gambino album. That is the outlet’s account of the project, not a claim that Glover would stop creating music altogether. Atlanta Journal-Constitution
18. The 2018 remark and the 2024 album belong to a timeline
Glover’s 2018 comments about endings preceded the 2024 release identified by the AJC as the final Childish Gambino album. Read together, they document an artistic chapter closing over time; they do not establish a specific next stage or rule out future work under another name. The tour cancellation and later health disclosure
19. The remaining New World Tour dates were canceled in October 2024
The Associated Press reported that Glover canceled more than 30 remaining tour dates after a health issue requiring surgery. His public note at the time asked for time to heal but did not state a diagnosis. The AP report is a contemporaneous account of the cancellation, not an explanation of the underlying medical condition. Associated Press
20. A later report attributed a more specific disclosure to Glover
Biography.com’s November 2025 update says that Glover disclosed at a performance that he had suffered a stroke in 2024 and that doctors found a hole in his heart, requiring two surgeries. This is a later secondary report; it should not be conflated with the AP’s October 2024 coverage, which did not provide a diagnosis. Biography.com
