For an easy laugh, start with Friends; for Halloween-night supernatural tension, choose Stranger Things. This hand-picked watchlist spans sitcom parties, annual specials, coming-of-age stories and horror, grouped by mood rather than ranked as an objective top 20. Each entry names the episode and explains whether Halloween drives the story or simply sets the scene.

1. Friends — Season 8, Episode 6, “The One With the Halloween Party”
Monica and Chandler host a costume party, where Ross’s pink bunny suit and the guests’ costume disputes supply the comedy. Rachel handles trick-or-treaters while Phoebe’s encounter with Ursula adds another layer to the gathering. Hulu lists this as Friends’ Halloween episode; it is a straightforward holiday-party story.
2. The Office — Season 7, Episode 6, “Costume Contest”
A workplace costume contest turns into an excuse for rivalry among the Dunder Mifflin employees. Pick this for the awkward office humor and competitive dressing-up, not for a supernatural plot.
#1 Best Overall
3. Cheers — Season 3, Episode 4, “Fairy Tales Can Come True”
Two costumed patrons meet at the bar, giving this episode a warm, romantic feel. It’s a gentle seasonal choice when you want a Halloween setting without horror.
4. Modern Family — Season 2, Episode 6, “Halloween”
Claire turns the family home into a haunted house, and the plan brings out the competing personalities of the whole clan. It is the show’s first Halloween installment and a good fit for viewers who prefer family comedy to fright.
5. Parks and Recreation — Season 5, Episode 5, “Halloween Surprise”
A Halloween costume party becomes the setting for Ben’s surprise proposal to Leslie. The episode leans sweet and romantic, making it a seasonal pick for fans of the characters’ relationship.
6. How I Met Your Mother — Season 7, Episode 8, “The Slutty Pumpkin Returns”
Ted reconnects with the woman he first met years earlier at a rooftop Halloween party. The story pays off a running Halloween thread rather than building a scary plot; Hulu’s guide also highlights the show’s rooftop-party and “Slutty Pumpkin” tradition.
Rank #2
- An instant library of 50 horrorics assembled on 12 DVD's.
7. Frasier — Season 5, Episode 3, “Halloween”
A literary costume party sets up romantic misunderstandings involving Frasier, Niles and Roz. The appeal is the characters’ confusion and the party’s bookish dress-up, not scares.
8. Brooklyn Nine-Nine — Season 5, Episode 4, “HalloVeen”
The precinct’s Halloween Heist tradition takes a romantic turn when Jake’s plan becomes part of his proposal to Amy. It works especially well if you enjoy the show’s recurring competition and have seen earlier heists; Netflix Tudum’s guide also points readers toward the multi-season tradition.
Family-friendly and coming-of-age Halloween stories
These episodes put trick-or-treating, childhood rituals or a family’s seasonal chaos at the center.
9. Bob’s Burgers — Season 4, Episode 2, “Fort Night”
The Belcher children wind up trapped in a cardboard fort while trying to get Halloween candy. The candy quest and sibling dynamics make this a playful choice; Hulu’s guide lists it alongside later Halloween episodes, including Season 12, Episode 3, “The Pumpkinening.”

10. Freaks and Geeks — Season 1, Episode 3, “Tricks and Treats”
Sam and his friends try to squeeze in one more childhood trick-or-treat outing, while Lindsay’s pranks and a bully complicate the night. The episode uses Halloween to explore the awkward shift between wanting to grow up and missing what childhood made possible.
11. Gilmore Girls — Season 6, Episode 7, “Twenty-One Is the Loneliest Number”
This is Halloween-adjacent rather than a full holiday plot: Rory’s birthday and her strained relationship with Lorelai take the lead, while Stars Hollow supplies the seasonal atmosphere. Choose it for the town’s fall character and family drama, not a costume-centered story.
Spooky, supernatural and horror picks
These selections bring monsters, personal fears or macabre imagery into the story. The scare level varies, but they are darker than the party comedies above.
12. Stranger Things — Season 2, Episode 2, “Trick or Treat, Freak”
Set on Halloween night, this installment puts the boys in Ghostbusters costumes while the threat from the Upside Down continues to gather. It is not a self-contained holiday special: the Halloween action is part of the season’s larger supernatural arc. Netflix’s official series catalog is a useful series reference.

13. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Season 4, Episode 4, “Fear, Itself”
A frat party becomes a horror scenario as the Scoobies confront their deepest fears. This is one of the list’s stronger scare picks, with the holiday setting serving a story about what frightens each character.
14. The Simpsons — Season 6, Episode 6, “Treehouse of Horror V”
The annual anthology gives the show room for several Halloween stories in one episode. Its “The Shinning” segment parodies The Shining, making this a strong choice for viewers who want cartoon horror with a comic edge—and a reminder that there is no single Simpsons Halloween episode to choose.
15. Grey’s Anatomy — Season 4, Episode 5, “Haunt You Every Day”
Meredith reckons with her mother’s memory while hospital cases and Halloween imagery give the episode a macabre seasonal texture. It is a dramatic, emotionally heavier option rather than a conventional haunted-house story.
16. Glee — Season 2, Episode 5, “The Rocky Horror Glee Show”
The students stage numbers from the cult musical and film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with original cast members Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf appearing. This is a theatrical Halloween-season homage, not a standard trick-or-treat or ghost story.

Adult comedy and Halloween-adjacent choices
These episodes are best for viewers who want sharper humor or a seasonal setting with an important qualification.
17. Curb Your Enthusiasm — Season 2, Episode 3, “Trick or Treat”
Larry refuses to give candy to teenagers who are not wearing costumes, and the decision brings the sort of social fallout the series thrives on. Its Halloween premise turns a small etiquette dispute into an escalating adult-comedy story.
18. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia — Season 6, Episode 7, “Who Got Dee Pregnant?”
This is the list’s most borderline pick: it aired during Halloween week, but its central action recounts events at an earlier Halloween party through flashbacks. Include it for the gang’s unreliable recollections and chaotic party comedy, not because it unfolds on Halloween night.
Choosing what to watch
- For a relaxed group watch: try Friends, Modern Family or Bob’s Burgers.
- For romance with costumes: choose Parks and Recreation, Cheers or Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
- For a recurring tradition: the Simpsons anthology and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Halloween Heists show two very different ways a series can return to Halloween.
- For darker tension: choose Buffy for a concentrated fear-driven horror story or Stranger Things for Halloween embedded in an ongoing supernatural plot.
- For a story that is seasonal but not wholly about the holiday: Gilmore Girls and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia come with that distinction.
Episode catalogs and streaming rights change, and platform availability varies by country. Hulu and Netflix’s editorial guides are helpful for episode references, but they do not guarantee that a title is currently streamable in every territory. Check the service catalog where you live before planning a watchlist.

This is an editorial watchlist, not a measured ranking. The choices balance how central Halloween is to the plot, the episode’s tone and scare level, how easily it works as a standalone watch, and the memorable device or character moment that makes it worth revisiting. The list includes holiday-centered stories, recurring anthology or competition formats, and a few explicitly labeled Halloween-adjacent episodes.
For broader seasonal browsing, Hulu’s Halloween episode guide lists picks across shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy and New Girl. Netflix Tudum’s Halloween TV guide offers a separate editorial selection, including Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Fuller House. Neither guide is a universal ranking or an assurance of current availability.
