Spoiler warning: This ranking names and explains major reveals from all 20 films. What is the best movie plot twist of all time? There is no objective answer: this editorial ranking weighs surprise, how fairly the film prepares the reveal, how much it changes earlier scenes, its emotional or thematic force, and how rewarding the film is to revisit. A twist is more than a shock when it makes the story you have already seen mean something different.

How this ranking judges a twist

The order below is an editorial judgment, not a settled canon. It considers six related qualities: surprise, setup and fairness, recontextualization, emotional or thematic force, placement and pacing, and rewatch value. A final-scene shock can be powerful, but so can a midpoint turn or a structure that gradually changes how the viewer understands time.

Published rankings and polls use different methods and reach different results. StudioBinder’s June 23, 2026 list places Psycho first; Tom’s Guide’s February 8, 2026 reader poll gave The Sixth Sense the most votes among the films it asked about. That poll received 1,975 final responses, but it was self-selected and is not a representative measure of film quality. The list here uses neither as a universal verdict.

The 20 best movie plot twists, ranked

1. Psycho (1960)

Spoiler: Marion Crane, introduced as the apparent lead, is killed well before the film ends, and the story shifts to the investigation around Norman Bates. The later revelation that Norman’s mother is dead and that he assumes her identity reframes the killings and the motel’s eerie atmosphere.

Movie Trivia Party Game (Amazon Exclusive) – Contains Over 800 Questions – 2 or More Players for Ages 12 and up by Outset Media
  • EASY-TO-PLAY: Test your cinema knowledge and take a trip down memory lane as you reflect on favorite box office hits, Oscar winners, and classic movie quotes. Movie Trivia is an easy to learn game making it perfect to play with family and friends.
  • FAMILY FAVORITE: Movie Trivia spans the Hollywood classics to modern day movies. Teens to adults will enjoy answering these trivia questions.
  • TRIVIA CATEGORIES: Movie Trivia Game includes the following categories: Comedy/Animation, Action/Adventure, Drama/Musical, and Horror/Sci-Fi.
  • INCLUDES: 110 Double-sided cards (880 questions), Score pad, Pencil, Instructions.

Why it ranks here: Hitchcock’s film does not rely on one surprise alone. It first breaks the audience’s assumption about whose story it is, then supplies a second, psychologically disturbing explanation. Its structure makes the viewer experience uncertainty rather than simply hear an answer.

2. The Usual Suspects (1995)

Spoiler: The mild-mannered Roger “Verbal” Kint is revealed to be the feared criminal Keyser Söze, and much of the account he has given investigators appears to have been improvised from details in the room.

Why it ranks here: The reveal turns a crime story into a lesson in how easily a confident narrative can control its audience. Its power depends on the gap between what the investigators think they know and what the viewer has accepted from Verbal.

3. Fight Club (1999)

Spoiler: Tyler Durden is not a separate person but a dissociated identity of the unnamed narrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: The film plants clues in behavior, dialogue, and editing, then makes earlier scenes look different once the two identities are understood as one. The reveal serves the film’s themes of alienation and self-destruction instead of functioning as a detachable gimmick.

4. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Spoiler: Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe has been dead for much of the film; the people around him have not been responding to him as he believed.

Why it ranks here: The revelation changes the meaning of Malcolm’s encounters and the film’s quiet pauses. It is both a puzzle solution and an emotional turn, which helps the film remain affecting even when the secret is already known.

5. Memento (2000)

Spoiler: Leonard’s investigation is not a straightforward pursuit of a single answer. The film’s reverse chronology and his selective use of evidence expose how he can shape his own search and keep himself moving toward a chosen belief.

Brass Monkey - Poorly Explained Movies Party Trivia Game
  • How to Play: Compete with your friends to identify popular movies from the most convoluted movie summaries possible. Has your mom ever tried to explain a film that she just watched? Did it make one ounce of sense? Of course not–and that’s precisely the inspiration for this game. For example: A goose suddenly dies and it makes everyone really depressed. Psst, it’s 'Top Gun’.
  • Package Includes: Features 125 game cards–each featuring a uniquely-terrible description of a movie. Includes instructions for two distinct ways to play (competitive & casual). Suitable for 2 to 8 players.
  • Perfect for parties: Brass Monkey’s “Poorly Explained Movies Game” is the perfect party game to make sure everyone has a great time, bring it to your next college dorm game night, happy hour, or even bachelor/bachelorette party and see for yourself.
  • Gift Ideas: Ideal gift for birthdays, graduation, holiday gifts, and Christmas

Why it ranks here: Rather than save one surprise for the end, Christopher Nolan makes structure itself the revelation. Each new piece of context alters the viewer’s understanding of scenes already seen, making the film unusually suited to a second viewing.

6. Planet of the Apes (1968)

Spoiler: The ruined Statue of Liberty reveals that the planet where astronaut George Taylor has landed is Earth, long after humanity’s collapse.

Why it ranks here: One image converts an adventure premise into a bleak judgment about human civilization. The Ringer has noted that the Statue of Liberty ending was a screenwriter’s addition that transformed the story into social commentary. The reveal’s reach is larger than the puzzle of where Taylor is.

7. Gone Girl (2014)

Spoiler: Amy Dunne has not been murdered by her husband, Nick; she has staged her disappearance and constructed evidence to frame him.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: The midpoint pivot changes the film from a missing-person investigation into a battle of competing performances and control. It also complicates the audience’s confidence in both spouses, rather than simply clearing one suspect and condemning another.

8. Soylent Green (1973)

Spoiler: The food product Soylent Green is made from human remains.

Why it ranks here: The blunt discovery gives the film’s scarcity and social breakdown a horrifying material consequence. It is a memorable final revelation, though its force rests more on the scale of the dystopian premise than on a layered chain of clues.

9. Shutter Island (2010)

Spoiler: U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is actually Andrew Laeddis, a patient at the institution he believes he is investigating; the inquiry is a role-play treatment built around his delusion.

  • EASY TO PLAY: Simply listen to a 15-second song hint from a movie's soundtrack, use your "Cut Cards" for additional clues, and guess the movie to advance around the board.

Why it ranks here: The film encourages suspicion about the institution while also embedding clues that undermine Teddy’s account. The reveal recasts the investigation as an attempt to reach a man who cannot face his own history.

10. Oldboy (2003)

Spoiler: Oh Dae-su learns that the woman he has fallen in love with is his daughter, and that the relationship has been engineered as part of his torment.

Why it ranks here: This is a devastating reversal in which the answer to the mystery is inseparable from the film’s emotional cruelty. Its power is undeniable, but its extreme content makes it a particularly difficult twist rather than a broadly pleasurable one.

11. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

Spoiler: The Manson Family’s planned attack on the neighboring house is redirected to Rick Dalton’s home, where the intruders are killed instead of carrying out the real-life murders the audience expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: The turn works through historical expectation: viewers recognize the danger before the characters do, then watch the film bend history into an alternate ending. Its impact is less about a hidden identity than the suspenseful collision between fact and fiction.

12. The Prestige (2006)

Spoiler: Robert Angier’s transported-man illusion is accomplished through a machine that creates a duplicate, while Alfred Borden’s “one man” trick depends on two identical twin brothers sharing a life.

Why it ranks here: The film makes its central question—how is the trick done?—a mirror of its characters’ costs and obsessions. The layered explanations reward attention, though the reveals are more satisfying as part of the film’s design than as a single isolated shock.

13. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Spoiler: The apparent family conflict and the identity of the girls’ stepmother are filtered through a protagonist whose perception of events is not reliable; the story’s later revelations expose the trauma beneath that perspective.

  • MOVIES TRIVIA CONTENTS: For 2 or more players ages 12 years and up, Movies Trivia is a fun game that includes 880 questions and answers with 4 categories on each card.

  • TRAVEL ACTIVITIES: This compact, portable game can easily fit in a purse or backpack, making it perfect as an on the go activity for long road trips in the car and long waits at the restaurant.

Why it ranks here: The film uses disorientation and atmosphere to make the viewer inhabit a fractured understanding of the household. Its reversal is emotionally grounded, but the ambiguity makes it less mechanically tidy than the highest-ranked puzzle films.

14. Primal Fear (1996)

Spoiler: Aaron Stampler’s meek, fragmented persona is revealed to have been an act; he has manipulated his lawyer and the court.

Why it ranks here: The courtroom drama builds toward a clean reversal of the audience’s judgment about its apparent victim. It lands strongly in the moment, though it does less to transform the film’s earlier scenes than the twists above it.

15. The Handmaiden (2016)

Spoiler: The apparent con between handmaiden Sook-hee and con man Count Fujiwara is repeatedly overturned as the film shifts perspective and reveals who has been deceiving whom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: Park Chan-wook structures the story in parts, using each new perspective to revise motives and loyalties. The layered reversals make the film more than a one-secret puzzle: its changing alliances are the central pleasure.

16. Arrival (2016)

Spoiler: Louise’s apparent memories of her daughter are glimpses of the future, not flashbacks; learning the aliens’ language changes how she experiences time.

Why it ranks here: The twist grows directly from the film’s ideas about language, time, and choice. Once the chronology is understood, the emotional meaning of Louise’s decisions changes without making them feel like a trick played on the audience.

17. Parasite (2019)

Spoiler: A hidden bunker beneath the Park family’s house shelters Geun-sae, the former housekeeper’s husband, changing the story’s class conflict into a more volatile struggle among the people excluded from wealth.

  • 🍿 One deck moves through movie trivia, acting, spoilers, casting and soundtrack challenges instead of repeating one task. That variety gives adult card games a more active feel, with 200 cards keeping 4+ players switching gears.
  • 🎭 A typical game lasts about 30 minutes, giving 4+ players enough time to move through different movie challenges without making the night drag. It fits games for adults and family that need a clear, lively session length.
  • 🎁 Made for movie lovers, families and groups of friends ages 14+, I’M Your Movie works well among games for adults and family, giving 4+ players the same mix of trivia, acting, guessing and movie-based challenges
  • ⏱️ Inside the box are 200 cards and 1 die, giving the group a broad mix of movie prompts and challenge types to work through. That tangible content helps adult card games feel varied across a 30-minute session for 4+ players.

Why it ranks here: This midpoint revelation changes the film’s genre and its social geometry. It is not a final answer to a mystery; it opens a new conflict and sharpens the film’s account of scarcity and competition.

18. The Others (2001)

Spoiler: Grace and her children are the ghosts in the house, while the living people they fear are trying to occupy it.

Why it ranks here: The revelation reverses the film’s apparent haunting and gives its earlier encounters a new logic. Its atmosphere and performances make the reveal more than a puzzle payoff.

19. Saw (2004)

Spoiler: The apparently dead body lying between the two trapped men is Jigsaw himself, who rises and leaves the room after the test is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: The final image delivers an efficient shock and turns a seemingly inert detail into the key to the scenario. It is exceptionally memorable, though its primary effect is surprise rather than broad recontextualization.

20. Murder on the Orient Express (1974)

Spoiler: The murder was committed collectively: the passengers each played a part in killing a man who had escaped justice for a child’s kidnapping and death.

Why it ranks here: The solution expands a conventional whodunit into a moral question about justice and complicity. Its conclusion is powerful, but the film’s interest is as much in the ethical dilemma after the reveal as in the mechanics of the surprise.

Why famous twists can still work when you know them

First-viewing surprise and lasting value are not the same thing. The Ringer’s ranking observes that viewers may continue to find films rewarding after learning their famous reveals. That makes sense: a well-built twist leaves behind clues, performances, themes, and emotional consequences to notice on a return visit. A film that only works until its secret is spoiled may be clever; one that changes shape on rewatch has done something more durable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Twists also do not have to wait for the final minutes. Gone Girl and Parasite use midpoint turns to redirect the story, while Memento makes chronology part of the reveal. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger told The Ringer’s Alan Siegel, in an interview published October 20, 2020, “The most important 10 minutes of any movie are the last 10 minutes.” That is a practitioner’s view, not a rule: the films above show that a twist can reshape an audience’s understanding at several points in a story.

Other rankings and reader polls

Tom’s Guide’s poll, published February 8, 2026, asked readers to choose among eight listed films. Among 1,975 final responses, The Sixth Sense received 727 votes (37%), The Usual Suspects 385 (19%), Planet of the Apes 209 (11%), Shutter Island 208 (11%), Fight Club 136 (7%), Oldboy 123 (6%), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 114 (6%), and Saw 73 (4%). The figures describe those poll responses only; the poll covered a limited slate and does not establish a universal ranking.
