Eminem’s career has moved from a second-place finish at a Los Angeles rap competition to Grammy-winning albums, an Oscar-winning song, a Super Bowl halftime show and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “Iconic” is a judgment, not an official ranking, so this selection follows documented milestones across his career rather than claiming to be definitive.
Early breakthrough: from Detroit battle rapper to major-label artist
1. Second place at the 1997 Rap Olympics
Eminem’s breakthrough story began at the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he placed second. The Recording Academy says an Interscope staff member discovered him there. Jimmy Iovine later played Eminem’s debut EP for Dr. Dre, who responded, “Find him. Now.” The episode connects a live competition to the record-industry partnership that would shape the next phase of his career. Recording Academy artist profile

The Marshall Mathers LP arrived in 2000, pairing the irreverent “The Real Slim Shady” with “Stan,” a dark narrative song that became one of Eminem’s most widely recognized tracks. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame highlights both in its career profile. The Recording Academy records that the album won Best Rap Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards and was also nominated for Album of the Year. 7. 8 Mile makes him a leading man
The 2002 film 8 Mile gave Eminem a starring role and brought his music to a film audience. The Recording Academy describes it as semiautobiographical: its story draws on aspects of his background, but it is not a literal account of his life. Its soundtrack supplied “Lose Yourself,” making the film and song a major crossover moment in his career. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”

Released in October 2002, “Lose Yourself” became Eminem’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to the Recording Academy. Its achievement gave the 8 Mile soundtrack song a chart milestone of its own, separate from the film’s success. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”
9. He writes and records it while making the film
The song’s creation is unusual because it was tied so closely to production of 8 Mile. The Recording Academy retrospective says Eminem wrote “Lose Yourself” on the set between takes and recorded it in a mobile studio set up in a spare trailer. The account links the song’s urgency to the circumstances in which he made it, rather than treating it as a separate studio project conceived after the film. At the 46th Grammy Awards, “Lose Yourself” received five nominations and won Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song, according to the Recording Academy retrospective. How the milestones fit together
These moments trace a career through distinct kinds of recognition: a competition that led to a record deal, a major-label debut, Grammy wins, a film crossover, an Oscar-winning song, sustained catalog chart presence, international chart leadership and institutional honors. For a sense of scale, Interscope reports 130 million albums and 389 million singles sold worldwide, and says Eminem sold 32.2 million albums in the United States in the 2000s, making him Nielsen SoundScan’s top-selling artist of that decade in the country. Those are label-reported figures; the page does not state a measurement cutoff or methodology. Interscope artist page
