Spoilers for 1923 Season 2, Episode 6, “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters.” The penultimate episode leaves the Dutton family under attack, Teonna grieving two losses, and Alexandra stranded in winter. TV Insider reports that five Season 2 main-cast characters die by the end of the episode, but its detailed recap does not identify all five by name. The deaths it specifically recounts include Pete Plenty Clouds, Jack Dutton, Runs His Horse, and Father Renaud; Paul and Hillary also die.
Which episode sets up the 1923 Season 2 finale?
“The Mountain Teeth of Monsters” is Season 2, Episode 6, the penultimate episode. The finale is titled “A Dream and a Memory,” listed by Paramount Press Express as episode 207. Paramount+ began releasing Season 2 on February 23, 2025, according to its official season-two announcement.
TV Insider’s recap says seven people and a horse die in Episode 6, and describes five Season 2 main-cast deaths. Its detailed account names four principal characters who die, while separately recounting the deaths of Paul and Hillary. Because that account does not establish who the fifth main-cast character is, this recap does not guess or present an unverified five-person list.
The Dutton ranch: Jack is killed on the road
Jack Dutton
After the previous episode’s shootout cliffhanger, Jack leaves his post and rides toward Jacob. Men working for Banner exploit Jack’s trust and shoot him. His death compounds the family’s danger as the conflict over the ranch continues, and leaves his pregnant wife, Elizabeth, facing a devastating personal loss.
Actor Darren Mann described Jack as “naïve in the best ways,” a quality that helps explain why he expects other people to act in good faith. The preceding episode’s shootout is recapped by What to Watch.

Teonna’s flight: Pete, Runs His Horse, and Renaud die
Pete Plenty Clouds
Pete dies in a duel with Marshal Kent, following the shootout cliffhanger. His horse dies as well. The loss devastates Teonna and shatters the escape plan she shared with Runs His Horse.
Runs His Horse
As he and Teonna travel, Runs His Horse believes the danger has passed and lights a fire. Father Renaud finds them and shoots him. Teonna is left without her father while she remains in danger. Michael Spears, who plays Runs His Horse, said of learning about the character’s fate: “I started a little grieving process.”

Father Renaud
Renaud has pursued Teonna throughout her escape. When he confronts and threatens her, she kills him. Sebastian Roché described Renaud as someone who “truly believes that he’s right in his quest to save these people’s souls.” His conviction does not soften the threat he poses to Teonna.
Alexandra’s journey: Paul and Hillary freeze in the storm
Paul and Hillary are driving pregnant Alexandra west when their car runs out of gas in a snowstorm. They freeze to death. Alexandra survives, but is left destitute and must continue on foot. Her journey ends the episode as a separate, immediate survival crisis, far from the Dutton ranch.

What remains unresolved before “A Dream and a Memory”?
- The Duttons: Jack’s death deepens the family’s peril in the conflict involving Whitfield and Banner.
- Teonna: Pete and Runs His Horse are dead, and she has killed Renaud; the consequences of her escape remain uncertain.
- Alexandra: She is alive, but stranded in harsh winter conditions after Paul and Hillary’s deaths.
- Spencer: His train journey is the major storyline TV Insider identifies as the exception to the episode’s deaths.
These threads carry directly into the finale, “A Dream and a Memory.” Paramount reported that the finale drew 14 million global viewers in its first seven days and was, at that time, the series’ most-watched episode; the figure is from Paramount’s 2025 announcement, not a current viewership total.
